Been working on the other mountain and have about got the logging camp down the the mill done. Need some thin stuff for the ground to the town though. Gonna need more supplys for the rest of the mountain. A couple showing the buildup minus cardboard and tape for the lower part of the mountain.

Got quite a lot of stuff yesterday and today. I finished the pocket doors to allow me access to the track right behind the tunnel portals. I shown one open and shut. I got first coat on most of the big mountain but need to finish the other side of the mountain. I ran out of steam so its like it is. I went to working on the truck till i found i need more parts so running around town trying to find what i need. My classic truck is 30 years old and gets a bit hard to get parts for it. Its another part of my life right now. I love it and take care of it. I find something wrong i start there and then as i find something else i go to that and the fun just keeps going on. Sounds like my last train layout:giggle:
This is shots of my layout from one end to the other right now. Slow baby steps...

Nice! But I'm glad the glaciers took away the mountains and left us with "kettles and moraines" and forests. Oh yah The Great Lakes. But we can scoot around them.
    Thanks for sharing.

Hehe, I do have a few places where the newspaper didn't hold up with the risers of foam. Caused some sags. In one place i liked how it worked but other places will need more..help. Second coat should work and a third coat should do the rest and trees should cover up any other places needed. Will see how it works. Will show shots later, Smoke

Work on the big mountain is done. After it drys i will paint base coat and see if anything else needs fixing. That right mountain really needs fixing so it will be getting that later tonight or most likely tomorrow. I finished the plaster between the tracks at the sawmill and store tracks. Still waiting for Kato to ship there new flex track. That will finish the Sawmill at the log dump. That will be the last of the track. Glad when the mountains are finished. Tired of looking at it. Want to get it cleaned up so i can run trains! Shots below, smoke

Well, I got the rt side mountain looking much better. I can cover the bad areas with trees and grasses to hide any other imperfections on that mountain. Getting ready to do one last area. The big trestle and the rock wall. That should get it done. Gonna paint the mountains to see if anything else needs attention. Its getting there! Smoke

Well, Not a sprint but still hate scenery work that i am kinda wanting to get through it faster than track. I have four shots showing the earth and the white rock. I am still planning to add some rock outcropping on the big mountain on the left side. I am also thinking of cutting that mountain so it can be more rounded instead of pointed. But then, trees can cover it up. I also still have a bit of rock to finish behind the sawmill

Do the rail yards get near the peaks? Would they not be better in the back ground?

The tracks you see near the mountains is for the logging camp. Its where they get the logs for the sawmill. It kinda has to be up there. I forgot a couple more shots of that backside of the sawmill. That is for the edge of the river bank and it also matches the old part where the water tank stands. Tomorrow should be fun. Rocks turn for paint. If you think my yard is close to the mountains try and see what yo think of these shots of cass

Well, I got the first coat on. Blending the grey with earth to get the effect looking for. Got to much on the lower side of the mountain. Tomorrow i can work on the lighter shades of grey and blend it out. Only doing a bit at a time so i may wait a couple of days before i post again. Smoke

    OleSmokey,
I'm really liking this thread. Nice layout. It's getting me moto to get working on my transition era layout . When I finish that I'll finally get to build a logging layout.
Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your progress.

    OleSmokey,
In my neck of the world (Wis. & UP) the mother trains stayed along the valleys and flat lands. In the little mountains they used narrow gauge and cog wheels to pull out the trees, lead, copper, tobacco leaves and hemp.

In the 50 and 60's they were starting to use Tractor Trailers instead of trains. But in the 40's they used trains. Shays were the favorite and climax and hyster was a couple of others they used on logging camps. I have a couple of shays that are in bad shape. I was going to be dcc'd, but my hands shake so much anymore that i can't finish them. So i went for NW-2's for the logging line and a 44 tonier for the yard switching and two RS-2's for the main line. Everything is dcc with or without sound. I don't care for the sound. Its a distraction to me. Not only that but i have issues with the sound on the engines and they are finicky at running. They want to screw up without warning. Still has sounds but will not run. Have to take it apart and hit the reset button and turn on power. its a PITA!! One of them, i am taking out the dcc sound chip and putting a NCE board in. The rest all work great so maybe working the NW-2 will stop the main issues i have with the sound board. Back to the story line I am showing a logging camp and Lumber company in West Virginia. Like you said main line and sawmill was in valley and the logging camp was up in the mountains. There wasn't a lot of narrow lines there. It was cheaper to just buy engines from other lines and so that was the way they went. I have seen old F units running on the old tracks. Check out Cass railroad. They have mostly shays from the local lines in the area. I kinda used a town called Spruce and the sawmill down in Cass. That line worked till 1960 or 1961 when it shut down.
Will be back later. My layout is giving me some issues with paint and the mountains. Something is wrong with the paint. More later, Smoke
