It's 12:06am and I'm just getting a chance to write this. No chance to edit this one, my son took it as we drove by the yard, because he'd never seen a KCS unit before.
Face-off at Hays station: The John Molson is a replica of one of the first steam locomotives to operate in Canada (1840-ish), built in 1970. Note the engineman rooting around behind the driver, with his head between the spokes... The station platform here belongs to a replica station building named for Charles Melville Hays, president of the Grand Trunk Railway until his untimely demise aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912. He was a career railroader, previously serving as general manager then vice-president of the Wabash, St Louis and Pacific. and president of the Southern Pacific. He founded the Grand Trunk Pacific with the goal of creating another transcontinental up here in Canada. He didn't see that dream come true before he went down with the Titanic. The Grand Trunk, Grand Trunk Pacific and a handful of others eventually became the Canadian National, the symbol of which adorns the little speeder on the right side of the photo.
This shot goes back to one night long ago when I chased a Lake State freight from Bay City to the gypsum quarry at National City. While I was waiting for the train to leave, I caught these Central Michigan units tied up at Wenona yard. Admittedly, the light wasn't the best, but CM is gone and this shot captured a scene that won't be repeated.
