Yes, I agree! As much as I like the sound of multi-chime horns, they still don't do the same thing as a steam whistle. Does anybody else think 4014's whistle has become a bit higher pitched and clearer as they have run her since the restoration? After sitting for 60 years? It still seems a bit surreal I was in the presence of that incredible machine in 2019. Doug
A friend of my brother created this. UP 4014 and a horse named Leah ridden by 19-year old Katrina raced at Firstview, Colorado, Sunday, 5 September 2021.
Pickens U-18s slow at Belton, SC to pick up interchange from the Greenville & Western. Line is former SOU. [09/03/2021]
Yep, and these are just the perfect model for a light rail shortline. SCL bought over a hundred of them. I have a number of pictures of these in SBD and CSX paint shot in AL in the mid-1980s. Cool then, cool now.
Doesn't get more beautiful than this, God Bless America! This would make a great picture in an antique frame made outta' barnwood!
Trying to embed from Google Drive. this is the only 'link' it gives me. MP39 loading commuters in Roslindale bound for Boston on the Needham line. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bmplF-DqFIjjEbt-aG_RORIiZKbZrsSp/view?usp=sharing
Not showing unless I click on the link. Then it takes a bit to load. Apparently Google Drive doesn't like something about this... Either hot linking or photo (bytes) size.
I have been searching on line for a decent map of their system. I cannot find much. A couple so far, poor in detail. I do not see Belton on them. These must somehow be older maps?
I've not had much luck either. There are a bunch of old lines in the area, some operating, some abandoned long ago and some in place, but with no current service. It's really confusing to me and I still don't have it straight in my head. Both the SOU and P&N had parallel lines that once went 25 miles further south from the area to meet the SAL, ACL and other SOU lines at Greenwood, SC. Interestingly, these parallel lines passed through tiny communities that once hosted two tiny shortlines -- the Due West RR (last ran 1939) and the Ware Shoals RR (last ran 1985). These photos are at the end of the Pickens (former SOU) at Honea Path a mile beyond a corrugated box plant they serve. Prior to SOU's abandonment of it in 1983, this is one of the lines that used to continue on south to Greenwood.
