Well project done except for mounting it in the layout and adding coal. Little coal loader was built using nothing but scrap materials and a few odds and ends from the parts boxes. 100_1306-1 by John Moore posted Sep 12, 2021 at 9:19 AM 100_1307-2 by John Moore posted Sep 12, 2021 at 9:19 AM 100_1308-3 by John Moore posted Sep 12, 2021 at 9:19 AM The side dump car is from scratch using a Bmann 34 foot old time flat car and is one of a series of cars like this I built a number of years ago. The control station for the crane is made from a modified out house. The crane is made from a Demi Trains water column parts and some catenary pole parts. The crane is movable.
Just finished these two 'Hack' wit ha third(NP) about half done. Getting close to 1,000 based cars....
My Backdrops. They will be printed to 8.5"X14" in color on plain paper. I realized belatedly that I really need to get the backdrops up before the track is laid. I'm not sure how I will mount the print out but I'm thinking I'll try reinforced cardboard. If that does not work I'll go for foam. Yes, there are some straight lines in there I'll have to brush and then obscure.
You can use Masonite that comes in 1/8th to 1/4 inch thick and can be found in precut sheets of 2 by 4 foot. The Masonite can be attached to the layout frame by screws.
Yes, Thank yout. I would love to do that but 1) For both cost and environmental reasons I intend to reuse / repurpose as much as possible for everything on the layout. Some of the foam I am using is close to 10 years old. 2) Since it is in the layout is in the living room my backdrops will range from 8.5 to at most 14"s tall, (not including one of a city 'The Director of the Interior ' bought several years ago. ☻ That will be along the 'Western End' as a background for the 'Hyper Modern' city. Novices reading this: Use the Masonite method. It works great! It is a smooth durable surface.
Just could not refrain from posting. These images were made to find needed "fixes" and they will be fixed. Now all I need is for the car department to put some trucks under it. BTW, the sides are each one large decal, end pieces are each one decal, and the top strip is one decal. Some weathering, maybe heavy, will help the image some? ? ? Thanks for looking, above all be well, Carl
You mentioned this as the end car? Therefore it would collect the dust and dirt kicked up by the rest of the train.
@Carl Sowell Did you mean you use the car for track testing? I have one and it is so unstable / top heavy that it would be *perfect* for that purpose. Thanks for the idea.
Steve, Back about 65 years ago, as a punk, society often said "far out !". Now I will tell you that your background photo idea is far out ! My car is not top heavy at all. I placed all weights in the bottom of the car. The model is 3D printed so relatively light. I have not tried it yet so don't know how it will track. Should be OK with MT trucks under her. John, I have most likely decided to run this car at headend of train before the 1st fuselage, so it will pick up black soot, dirt, mud, no telling what else. I will use chalks to weather it. Since this 1:1 car no longer exists, as far as I could find, I'll need to dull it down quite a lot so it fits into our current era better. Being an SP guy I could not resist this version. BTW, your coal loader is cool ( far out ). Be well, Carl
Wow, many in the approximate same age era! Here are two completed cars for my Boeing fuselage train. Been fun and that's what it's all about. A wonky image but it shows the fred on tailend car..... I think they are acceptable and will fit in well withh the other8 cars. Thanks for looking BUT above all be well, Carl
