Well no longer on the workbench but now on the layout. Had to move a few things, cut down a building, and still need to put some grass, weeds, and coal. 100_1314-1 by John Moore posted Sep 16, 2021 at 6:58 PM Little coaling station is similar to some small European ones where small tank locos are filled by a bucket rather than a chute.
Nice work, John! ! ! I have been busy trying to get some "new" containers completed. Here are two that I finished today; 1st one is a Canadian Company This second topside container is quite appropriate for our N scale world. Couldn't resist doing it..... I have been busy stripping paint/decals from old containers and aslo searching for and finding newer companies. Re-painted the containers in white or silver, printed/applied the decals. Thanks for looking, be well, Carl
Finally... after 10 years after accidentally melting the deck plate on my BR70 locomotive I was able to get a replacement from the factory and then installed. Back when I first got the locomotive I converted to DCC and while soldering using a butane soldering iron I lost track of the vent holes and wound up melting part of the deck plate. Was sickened by that stupid mistake and getting a replacement part at the time was a major PITA. While the mistake may seem meh or even go unnoticed by most it bothered me a bit. Fortunately I was able to get a replacement direct from Fleischmann now that they've updated their site to handle those requests. This is a small engine but drives very smooth and quiet. Glad to have it back to 100%.
well I wanted some small passenger shelters to use with the Tram at places on the layout. Completely out of clap board or other suitable siding material and revolting at the prices for a single sheet I am using thin rigid card stock. Each measures 17 feet high by 20 feet wide by 8 feet deep and will mount on a 10 wide platform. One is to go in the port area outside the NUMA and USCG pier, one goes by the stoneworks and sawmill, and the last goes in the mine yard. 100_1329-1 by John Moore posted Sep 25, 2021 at 11:50 AM
Just about done. Needs some weathering and some bench seating. 100_1330-2 by John Moore posted Sep 25, 2021 at 9:05 PM
Tinkering with fascia colors. I have used black and dark brown to contrast the scenery and create that museum like window presentation type effect. Since I am working on some modules before I venture into a permanent garage layout project I thought I could play around a bit. I was thinking of using a color close to my base scenery color but my adult daughter pointed out a different color that pulled tidbits of the colors within the scenery. What a pleasant surprise when I bought both our choices to experiment. So I am comparing black, a light tan(Burnt Almond), and a brown/grey(Mocha Latte). The Mocha Latte actually looks great in person and the lighter Burnt Almond is downright distracting like the black is.
And the finished Tram shelters. Made my own bench seating and made some train schedule boards to hang in the shelters. 100_1332-1 by John Moore posted Sep 26, 2021 at 9:44 AM And my Woodland Scenics coal arrived so was able to finish the coal loader and fill the coal car. 100_1333-2 by John Moore posted Sep 26, 2021 at 9:44 AM
total distruction on my bench puppy chased cat up there got box car kit all over the place along with tool and etc
To me the Burnt Almond looks the best. When I built my modules I choose a transparent blue for the exposed woodwork, then during the staining process I found I really liked the distressed look that came after I sanded the stain for the second coat. I used blue for 2 reasons. First was I wanted my modules to be bright and draw attention, and secondly everyone else uses black brown or green… I wanted to be different.
Right now my bench has a brass SD70MAC on it getting major internal surgery. It’s owner attempted a decoder install that failed and fried the decoder, and after seeing my soldering skills at the last show we had, he asked me to repair it for him. Well in the repair process I discovered more damage and now we are looking to remotor the engine and I am also rebuilding one of the trucks. I will post pics of the surgery here soon.
New workbench project: Starting with one of these : Going to end up with one of these, I hope: Yes I know it is not the same model of loco but I just want to have fun. I have the decals on hand, I will have to freehand the black stripes (oh fun ?). I have some 1:1 cat whiskers, that I use for radio antennas on my vehicles, that I will put on this unit. I will not reference the UP as they were not happy with this graffiti job. I have painted the shell parts & will post images later. I know, I'm crazy but I am having fun. Heck with my shaky 81 year old hands/fingers, the stripes may be relatively easy. Be well, Carl
Here are the shell parts. Pretty good for rattle can spray, Ace Hardware "School Bus Yellow". I will let this dry for a week before handling, just to "make for sure". I'm thinking that what I need to paint the stripes with is a pinstriping brush. Any thoughts ? ? ? Thanks for looking, be well, Carl
Carl, This is what this "hobby" is all about. Having fun!! Looking forward to watching your progress. Enjoy, Wolf
You can do it. Should be beautiful. Old muzzleloader gunstocks were sometimes finished with hand painted ink Tiger stripes on plane maple. Same concept.
