    Hi All

I recently picked up the new heavyweight passenger cars from MTL. They are an RPO and 4 coaches. They are painted in the Black and Red paint scheme (McGuiness Scheme?) Looking to find an appropriate engine to pulls these. The only New Haven I have on the engine roster is a Spectrum Lt Mountain. I think by the time the Black/Red scheme came out, New Haven had gone diesel?

    Diesel and electric, yes.

ALCO PA-1s and Fairbanks-Morse CPA24-5s, primarily, among the diesels, though they also had ALCO and F-M road switchers and were just getting EMD FL-9s. Of the streamlined units, the ALCOs will by far be the easiest to find. A roadswitcher would be very appropriate, though, for a five car train of older equipment. ALCO RS-3 or F-M H16-44.

There's also EP-4 and EP-5 electrics, though of course they look better under catenary wires.

That's a great summary. I think the New Haven's GP-9s were also steam generator equipped. [Not my photo]

Yes, and they got some newer twelve cylinder ALCOs which may have been. I was trying to keep it close to the end of steam, since he mentioned he had some. But the heavyweights really were built like battleships, and were around a long while.

The New Haven also had Alco DL109's, which have been done in N.

Indeed they did, about 80% of the total DL 103a/105/107/109 production (60 of the 74, though none of the four boosters). But like the steamers, few if any were still operational when McGinnis went to Chinese Red, black and white. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing a pic of one in that paint.

But that doesn't mean no cranberry DL-109 ever hauled cars wearing that paint in its final days. You're right, I should have mentioned them.

Guys! Great info, many options. I am liking the F-M H16-44, or the GP-9 options.

Here is a cool shot of an FL-9 google found for me

    Wow.

She made that paint scheme look pretty good, didn't she?

    That's a really cool shot. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of a DL-109 in the McGinnis scheme. (y)

The box car looks worse for the wear with the kink in the roof line above the NH initials.
