    BREAKING NEWS

This afternoon’s commute was severely delayed by a major train derailment. Sources say that a westbound HB-E300 series train was struggling to get up to speed after leaving the station. The Series 211 express which normally passes this station was unaware of the delay and collided with the struggling train. This caused a chain reaction which also involved a third train set as cars from the first two left the tracks and hit the parallel train. It is unknown at this time how many casualties from the 3 trains.

News N contacted the local dispatch to get answers on how this could have happened. They told us that the HB-E300’s engineer radioed in saying his train was struggling and not getting up to speed. Dispatch then radioed the Series 211’s engineer but by that time it was too late, the collision was in progress.

We also contacted transportation officials and asked how could this have happened with today’s modern technology, and we have yet to receive any response. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. This is Massey reporting from News N.

    Yikes!

Looks like one nearly fell off the edge of the world, like back before Christopher Columbus' day (it was on this day in 1492 that he finished putting up raised fascia at the edge of the world so no one else would fall off).

    ;):D

Had one of those on th olde layout. It was exacerbated when the engineer turned the throttle the wrong way rather than hitting the dead man's switch.
Fortunately a 'gravity barrier' was in place and only egos were damaged. A study of the aerodynamic aspects of passenger cars will have to wait for another day.

I just recently had rolling stock run off the edge of the world. Luckily my World has carpet :) Just saying! In other news, when working on tiny parts they will fly into the carpet only sometimes to be found days later, when barefoot finds them, ouch :) Sometimes the carpet eats them :) Never to be found, except when you vacuum and here a noise and go, there's that part :)

Good Lord that sounds so similar. Especially the vacuum part. It made that noise this afternoon. Sooo!

I'm guessing the signals were out? (perhaps as in "not there"?!)

Otherwise, chalk it up to "Low Operator Pressure". Biological or otherwise...

Only slightly related, but are there any standards for signals in modular railroading?

More like the operator was trying to assist the HB-E300 and was not close enough to the throttle to prevent the collision. The operator also didn't think that 2 commuter trains would not want to run together, and thus didn't move all that fast... LOL oh well.

As for signaling on Modular layouts, there is no "standard" for it, but I have seen it done but on individual modules only, not club wide. Hell right now with my club, I'm trying to work on getting a wiring standard set just for the track bus.

My guess is that with the smaller gauges it would be what ever the modeler could accomplish. With larger gauges it could be much like on the real thing. Except things may be too close together for all of it.
Even on HO I will do my own thing. On N I don't think anything will appear.

It seems clear to me that upgrades were underway but likely not yet completed before rush hour began.
