You guys remember those spout/openers we used to shove into the tops of quart oil cans? My dad used Trop Artic. All of our machinery on the farm ran on Butane, the oil was as clean at 30,000 miles as it was when fresh. Holy smokes, we used to air up flat tires with the stuff, talk about rolling bombs, lucky we survived growin up.
Those bring back memories. Just recently I bought an old fashion bottle/can opener for in the pocket. And I use it. Some where with all the moves I lost the ones I had in the house and shop. Including the oil can spouts. Rats.
Sure do. I kept mine up until fairly recently, but threw it away to gain space. I'm now facing the same decision with my old oil filter wrench, now unemployed because I sold my pick up and our cars both take the new style paper cartridge oil filters.
Well you have got me thinking, a dangerous thing I might add, I have a brewery on my layout, and I like the smaller cars for my tight curves. I had forgot all about the beer can shorties. Found that Atlas made two different numbered molasses cars in the shorties. Now directly across from the brewery is a plant for animal feed which uses the spent grains and products from the brewery. Now molasses is used in animal feeds and in making rum. So an order has been placed for the two molasses cars which should arrive withing a week. I also hopped on Ebay and bought two more chemical shorties at $& and $9 so these cars are now winging their way here also.
I have quite a few of the “beer can” short tank cars. My planned “big layout” has need for a lot of tank cars. Now that I am officially retired, I hope that I will be able to start working on it in the not too distant future. It will probably be a little while though. I have these, other Atlas, even some A1G’s, Atlas Kaolin cars, a few of the better 41’ Bachmanns, a bunch of Roundhouse, mostly 50’s, but a few of their 30’s, Athearns, and a few MTL 56’ tank cars. Paper mills and chemical plants do a lot of tank cars. I guess that at different times, they have measured these cars differently, you see them referred to as 26’, 28’, 30’, and 32’, even though the cars all look the same.
And note for the record that the A2G beer can was being advertised right alongside the very-much-A1G 0-6-0 and Plymouth switchers, graphically (pun intended) illustrating that there was no straight line dividing A1G from A2G.
I have a long string of the circa '69~'70s? with metal wheels and Rapido couplers. My daydream is to convert the couplers to some form of 'draw bar' from king pin to king pin. I also have a kitbashed 'transition car' from Rapido to Kadee. Oddly I don't want to part with them. Silly emotional tie. Sigh, need to get track down and a yard built. I need them to carry Mystrium and Un-Obtanium.
The 12 oz cans were S scale. I think I remember the 8 oz cans being HO scale. They did look good in a long train.
You won't miss then soon. Then all you will need is an extension cord. That's all I use on the mo-ped.
Did someone say beer can cars? I might still have more in jewels cases somewhere. The less than a handful that looks a bit "fat" are the old MDC Roundhouse "30' Modern Tank Car". (Sorry for crappy phone picture.)
I love these tanks even though I have no use for them on my layout. Same with the Atlas 70 ton ore cars. I can't help but buy them any time I see them, and I see them a lot!
They give wonderful meaning to your layout. I don't care if it's the meaning you intended. But it's meaning, regardless. Now change the meaning of your layout to agree with the meaning you just gave it. Rots-a-ruck. LOL
I think I have ONE of those had no idea that's what they were called? Cool, have to find mine. At least I think that is what I have? Looks like it.
My ore cars fit right in with the compact cars on my layout. A batch of them are painted gray and lettered MMM for the Macie Moly Mine. The ore has a blue tint to it. The cars are in captive service from the mine to the ore dock in the port where the ore is loaded into barges. I have both full and empty cars modeled. A few outside roads are represented and they go to the car float to be shipped off the island. 100_1381-3 by John Moore posted Oct 23, 2021 at 8:30 PM I also have a small fleet of these Japanese tank cars which are small and made by Bandai. A regular car is behind for you to compare size. They will be joined next week by 4 beer can cars. 100_1383-4 by John Moore posted Oct 23, 2021 at 8:42 PM
Well three of the beer can shorties arrived this evening. I compared one with the Bandai shorty tank car and they are pretty close in size. Two are from a vendor and one is off the Bay. So have two molasses cars now and one chemical car with another chemical car due in a day or so. 100_1391-4 by John Moore posted Oct 25, 2021 at 8:14 PM
