"Accurately scaled from prototype plans" and yet there isn't any photos of any cars that look even close to them. I know I have one for Brea Chemical since I used to drive thru Brea (CA) next to the chemical plant years ago to go to work but I never saw anything like these cars. I do wish I could find a photo of any of the Brea Chemical tank cars.
Both the 'shorty' beer tank cars and the 70 T oar cars have been favoites of mine since the 1980's. The big advantage was they were small and traversed 9-3/4" radius curves without a problem. Large numbers of these could be hauled with a single B-B truck diesel to make an impressively long consist. The 70T oar cars could be unmodified or drawbarred for a better look. The shorty bear can tanks look much better when upgraded using the Gold Metal Models brass kit.
Here are two that should qualify (though they are'nt Brea Chemicals cars): http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2360652 https://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?media/shorty-tank-car-sherman-tx.68224/
I see a lot of those black ones. They come through with three engines out front and an extra about every 40 tanks. And two on the end. All really snorting at about 35mph. I'm guessing the train could be about 4 or 5 miles long. Heading south. When going north there's fewer engines that are hardly working. And going south they are all nice and clean and run through at night.
That 2nd one combines the off-center platform (w/centered ladder) with the more smoothly rounded tank ends. Lots of variations! I sure wish Atlas would updated their beer can tank cars with finer details though. And the ore cars.
[QUOTE="BigJake, post: 1198086, member: 33849"I sure wish Atlas would updated their beer can tank cars with finer details though. And the ore cars.[/QUOTE] Have you tried these? Gold Medal Models Detailing Set for Atlas Beer Can Tank Cars (parts for two cars) 160-24 $10.00
Exactly! The description for the tank car set mentions roof walks, but these tank cars don't have roof walks. No mention of the platform floor or railings, or ladders (which are not like a normal box car ladder to the roof). I'm not willing to buy one to find out, either. Atlas has stepped up their game on lots of their freight cars, but not their beer cans! I have a beautiful Atlas LP tank car with fine details from ~15 years ago, so I know they have the ability to improve their beer cans...
For whatever reason this is the description that comes up for these parts. The parts that are in the package are for shorty tank cars. A note to Gold Medal Models will confirm this. http://www.goldmm.com
Got the last beer can tank in the post tonight and that completes my addition of these cars to fleet. Here the 4 beer can cars are posed in front of my entire small fleet of Japanese tankers. 100_1402-6 by John Moore posted Oct 27, 2021 at 8:41 PM
You make an excellent point -- I forgot all about those. My playworn c. 1967 Suburban Propane tanker was set aside when the new version was released in '05. Yes, the new version is beautiful. (I keep my old car though because it holds a lot of happy memories).
LOL, I didn't know there was an older version of those cars! The railings on the revised Atlas 33K gallon propane tank cars are the thin, durable plastic from which they now make handrails on locomotive models. Bettter than metal in some ways (they flex and bounce back into shape.)
