You will most likely need to buy a replacement part. You could attempt to glue it back into place, but I suspect the issue is due to a crack in the gear.

Mr Trainiac Thanks for reply . but there is no crack in the gear . i used my super magnifiers to view it after you said that. Im wondering if i can take it apart an fill in the whole with melted plastic then drill it back out a shade smaller than the axle shaft. i don't know where i would order something like that. maybe i can 3d print one if i can figger out how to make that small gear........

Hi Sidney, I'd try a drop of CA glue on the shaft allowing it to wick into the gear. Another trick is place a drop of CA glue on the shaft, then sprinkle some baking soda on the CA glue and allow that to harden. If one of those two ideas do not work, you'll have to go in search of a donor part as it appears the part you need is no longer in stock on the Kato USA website.

    sidney,

I did not know that KATO made an SW2. However they do make an NW2 and if you check KATO parts dpt. you may be able to get a new gear. Is tis HO or N scale?

    Be well,
    Carl

This rings a bell as being a known issue with these units. Maybe I recall seeing something at N Scale Encyclopedia on it.

I remember this being an issue with these, too.

ill have to try the ca trick. i did try some red loctite but that did not work.. I dont think ill look for a doner unless its real cheap. i aslo could not find parts from kato either. looks like no more katos for me. this lil loco does not have many run times on it.

Thank you all for the replies an possible fixes . looks like it goes into the great loco scrap yard for now. till something comes up at a latter date.
I did look at spooks page and did not see any thing about the bad gear slippage. in fact it said that it was a good loco. anywho Thanks

This loco was quite the departure from Kato's typical diesel loco drive design and the only one that I'm aware of that has any issues with gear cracking or slippage. This loco aside, I would say Kato drives are among the most reliable and smooth running diesel loco drives out there (I say diesel because that's all I run or really pay much attention to). IMHO, you would really be missing out if you decide to avoid Kato products based your experience with the NW2. Incidentally, I have 2 Kato NW2's that, so far, have not experienced this problem (knock on wood ;)).

tehachapifan.... ya i do love Katos too, update to this is I put a pin head drop of ca on the offending gear and so far 40 minutes running she is doing quite well. the ca worked for now. ok how i did it.. i filed down the shaft where the gear slides then cleaned it all with crc electronic cleaner and paper towel then added that tini tini drop of ca and slid the gear back over the filed sop and let that dry for two hrs. so far so good. video of her running if it will post....you tube link ... oh its the one pulling the green car with cross ties load
