I am making the Walthers Cornerstone Cinder Conveyor & Ash Pit. They use a thread to move the cinder conveyor but don't specify a size for the thread. Has anyone made this and can you recommend a thread size or can anyone recommend a thread size that will look realistic. Obviously, the color would be black. Even if they used steel cable, it would be black in a day. Thanks for any help I can get.

Somehow, I am not imagining a cable of any substantial diameter. Possibly 1/2 inch or less. In N scale 1/2 inch scales out to .003125 inches. Sewing thread uses several different sizing methods but there are charts for fishing line. The one I saw indicates 8x has a diameter of .0035 inches and a fishing strength of 1.1 lbs. Most human hair is about .004 inches in diameter. So pretty small stuff.

Thank-you. That was perfect. I got lucky, my wife had a spool in her sewing box which hasn't been opened in years. Thanks again!

I would go with fishing line. It will be flexing a lot and sewing isn't made for that kind of flex and stress. Fishing line is and used to be available in dark colors. For little pan fish it's very small.

Model Ship rigging line is my go to. Comes in black and brown and in different diameters depending on scale. The best part is quality rigging is pure cotton. Meaning that you can snug up lies by simply wetting them since cotton shrinks when wet and dries.
