The car has good bones, so a lot of work can turn it into a very nice car. I found the proto car on Fallen Flags and really liked it! I had the decals done, so I wàs off to the races! I rebuilt the frame and plumbed it. The bonnet came from the BB Athearn chemical tank car. All grabs were carved off and a new top platform was built.
That's pretty nice looking. I would not have thought of the AHM car as a 'good bones' car, but I think you're right, it does shape up to be a good model. What year is this car accurate for? I'd put it somewhere in the 1950's, just based on the trucks. Was the prototype in dedicated service for a certain commodity? I've always thought the postwar tank designs were strange looking, before frameless tanks started to show up in the 60's. Something about the smooth welded tank body and the full-length side platforms is a bit off-putting.
Thank you sir! It was built in 1954 and is dedicated to Chlorine service. I like most all tank cars, they stand out in a crowd!
