NS should reinstall the fourth track between Gallitzin/Tunnelhill and Altoona PA and offer rides downgrade on a vehicle such as that one.
You could wave - or scream - as you go past the Virtual Railfan live webcam at Horseshoe Curve.

DSC01690.JPG Norfolk Southern has also experimented with rebuilding EMD units with AC traction motors. NS 1818 leads NS 23Z West through Wernersville, PA enroute to its destination in Harrisburg with a solid block of JB Hunt doublestacks on the head end. NS 1818 was rebuilt from a NS standard cab SD70 by Progress Rail. It was photographed today, 8 January 2022. DSC01690.JPG

That's a cool rebuild! Basically they did a kitbash job with a straight SD70 and some front-end parts of an SD70ACe, making an SD70ACC.

Nice to see the 1:1 folks having as much fun as we do.:)

NS has done, in addition to the EMD's, almost 500 rebuilds of GE Dash9's. Those all get new cabs, even if the core unit had a wide cab to begin with.

CP 499 shuffles the deck in Minot, doing its pickup and setout work while the St. Paul diesel doctor attempts to figure out the DPU that shut down and won't restart, trying every manner of "shut it off and turn it one again and see if it works" to get the unit to play nice. In the end, the batteries were too dead to turn the prime mover over, although they had been replaced 3 weeks prior. The Minot CP mechanical guys then came out to jump start it, but I didn't stay past sunset for that!

The car is owned by the Federal Railroad Administration which is charged with enforcing railroad safety. As such, their Track Department operates a small number of railcars equipped with equipment to inspect rail lines. One of these is seen in the photos, a car probably converted from an old Amtrak Metroliner.

The NS crew was moving it off the main line into the siding so that a nearing freight could pass by.
