Nice Armand, one day when the price and time is right, (meaning I have the disposable money) I'll try and get the 1785 to complete the trio.

As I have a MTL 2-6-0 Mogul in my hands and it's catalog number from the box is 16002, and labeled "Z Scale Steam Locomotive w/Tender" on the box, you now know MTL did release these, and if JOES is who I think he is He would know what he is talking aboout

Steve, I'll bet you are thinking of Joe D. Joe D and Joe S are two distinct, different individuals. Just spoke with Joe D this morning.

Steve, They are both good Joe's. I don't know what Joe S will require of you to get out of the dog house, but I'm sure Joe D will want you to buy at least $200.00 worth of MTL product a month for the next year......) Woe is you.

No offense taken, I just thought he knew me as the guy that has been waving the Mogul banner for the last couple of years for the lack of American steam. :D.

AZL got the game changer for sure. What is funny though is I,ve found the heavy mike is much more quiet.

I'M NOT THAT LOUD, AM I? ;-) I have to agree with Joe, though: the heavy mikes (mine are GN, of course*) are very quiet

*So, GN Mike's Mikes are GN! :)

Just scored a #16002 at auction. And also two of the NN3 Colorado & Southern versions. Will report back when they arrive.

Sure wish I could find the Z one with the oil tender...

No way would I cut up a high value Loco, just to try and make it ‘right’.

When I got back into trains about 2005, I got hooked on Z but soon found that (in particular MTL locos, compared märklin and the AZL FP40 in the Amtrak. The MTL freight cars were ‘scale’ buy the fat body but worse, the trucks! When the AZL GP7 came out, I had to really double check the dimensions but with other releases, I started to drop the 80’s and moved on to the 2000’s. It’s like, yeah a Dodge slant-6 will last you a lifetime, but the new capabilities fuel injection and other amenities, I’m done. Especially when the MTL SD40. That was the real turnoff.

Now you have me wondering... What exactly you meant by this? Before I start comparing measurements I will say that the only non AZL modern loco I have is a MTL SD40-2 and it looks huge compared to my AZL GP7's and 38-2's, even big compared to my ES44AC's. I just figured it was a really large loco in reality, with a big walkway all around and stout chassis.

The body (e.g. 'shell') isn't so bad, its the trucks and that overly large 'deck' that really struck out to me. Several feet in the back, especially. I've been planning to put a Hot Tub, Palm Trees and else on it and load the deck ad even the shell with a Party Train theme.

I’ve got my first MTL SD40-2 on its way to me. The front and rear porches seem, in photos, to be close based on my time climbing on and off the prototype. I’d like to see if I can get the couplers reined in a bit. If the entire unit is out of scale I won’t be able to determine that until I have the loco in hand.

As offspring sang in their song come out and play…you gotta keep ‘em separated….

i started this thread 8 years ago. I still enjoy both companies locos. Some days I feel MT. Some days AZL That sw1500 got me just amazed right now but yeah things looks good when separated. Still :)

The "porches" are true to the prototype as far as I can tell. Even the HO scale versions have the same extended platform. Unless your talking about the giant coupler boxes sticking out the front and back. I cut those off and replaced with AZL couplers seen here. Of course, I'm not saying to cancel the hot tub party on that large deck though. :)

Funny how this old thread came back to life, lucky you Kez! I would love to see some new steamers from AZL or MTL, just look what Marklin is doing with new releases, amazing models. Back to my diesels...
I took a moment to measure and compare. The MTL SD40-2 is a little wide, at 15.91mm = 11'-6" which is 1'-3" wider than the prototype. My svelte AZL ES44AC is 14.22mm = 10'-3" which is only 4" wider than the prototype. But the SD40-2 is wider and it should be, and while the large porches look a bit cartoonish they also look big on the prototype. The SD40-2 was also only 4'-4" shorter than the 73'-2" long ES44AC despite being 85% the weight and 2/3 the power. They are both the same hight. So I guess I can let them run together as the overall impression is correct.

    Off topic:

Can you tell me how to do that or direct me to instructions? You say you cut them off but it looks like the boxes press into the chassis? Also I want to do it not so much for scale fidelity but this MTL SD40-2 in particular likes to throw cars around curves, and 245mm curves at that. Whether AZL couplers have more range of motion I don't know. But this loco made me dislike body mounted couplers in principle.

I did a search for 16002, and this is the thread that came up. ;) Not much talk of these Moguls around here, I guess.

I keep an eye open for these from time to time, and stumbled upon them at auction, so couldn't resist!

What I wish, is some of those 3d printer guys would start making USRA shells for the Marklin mechanisms. We need lots of different steamers in Z, and many can be represented by simple shell swaps.
