Looks like I can see a low nose. Was it rebuilt from a high nose, which might have came with controls for long hood operation?

Good eye, it is a low nose unit. With the introduction of the SD50, EMD discontinued offering the high nose even though NS wanted it. Despite the high nose being discontinued, NS still continued ordering their units set up to run long hood forward though the better part of the SD60 production runs. If you look close at this SD60, you can see the F near the steps indicating that is the front of the unit. One thing I'm not sure of but I think was that these units had the dual control stands in the cab so they could actually be operated in either direction and still have the engineer in the correct position.

Aha. Looking very closely, my antique eyes can see that "F" designator. :)

Wow, cool shot of a hard working GP-35! Lacking dynamic brakes, this N&W unit caught my attention and it has quite a story. It's a former Wabash unit, the 547. Ends up that she was the last new unit delivered to Wabash before the merger with N&W and after a residency at the National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, MO, now works for Watco as WMAX their #3533! You captured a very special locomotive that day.

    Was wondering why a N&W unit wasn't a high nose! Great catch!(y)
