Does anyone know if N scale bulkheads are being made? If so, where can I buy some? I know they were available over a decade ago because I bought several sets from Precision Masters - part #1210. I could use more now, but I didn't see a website for Precision Masters. If they're still in business, does anyone know how to contact them? Thanks for any replies. .
Precision Masters is long gone. Sometimes you can find an out of production item on an auction site. Good luck.
Check Gold Medal Models. They are not the same style as Precision Masters but might work for you none the less. Red Caboose bought PM and then RC was bought by Imtermountain (I think).
I was afraid of that. I did manage to find one set on ebay. I'm not sure how much to bid... Hmm... it's not worth more than 2 bananas...
A company named Locomotives made those a long long time ago. I used some on a Con Cor flatcar. Have you checked any of the 3D printing sites? Bob
I added them to a Con-Cor (?) flat car 30 years ago, as seen here painted for my railroad. Not sure which manufacturer provided the ends. It was a fun little project and I still enjoy running the car today. Our discussion here brings light to one of the major annoyances with N Scale today. While we have the latest in fine detail and advanced digital technology, many of the small businesses that provided detail parts for locomotives, rolling stock and structures, as well as craftsman kit makers are gone. This sort of freelance project work brought me great happiness and it's hard to find these days.
It's a damn shame they aren't made any longer. I had several packs from years and years ago and used them up not long ago myself. I stuck mine on some Walthers cars awhile back. There were at least two different styles? I think with the technology today, parts like should be easy to replicate. I'd love a 3D printer, but at the same time, I'd be happy to pay someone to print some up so I didn't have to go through the learning curve.
I did a google search for n scale bulkheads, but didn't find much. I think I'll change my plans and order some 3-D log bunks I found. Thanks for all the comments so far!
Maybe you could use Gold Medal Models kit 160-50? https://www.trainz.com/products/gold-medal-models-16050-n-bulkheads They are not specifically for pulpwood flats, but it might be a good start? Cheers Dirk
Thanks, Dirk. I was hoping to find pre-assembled bulkheads, since I just don't have the patience any more to deal with tiny detail parts...
Fun Fact: Modern pulpwood cars had their floors canted inward to more securely hold the wood in place. You can see the effect here. [Atlanta, GA 08/17/2002] Sadly, these have disappeared from today's railroad scene, as paper mills have transitioned to tree-length wood, worked with tree-length debarking drums and tree-length slasher decks. A '90s woodyard would make a great industry for your railroad. These could once be found everywhere, both large and small. By the way @Kisatchie, in 2019 Atlas made some nice 50' pulpwood cars. Of this series, Atlas Items 50 004 871 and 50 004 872 were SOU. Atlas also produced a good-looking 42' pulpwood car in the early 2000s into 2018, but none in SOU.
Would something like this work: If so, I could print you some. The one on the left is printed in plastic and the one on the right in "wood" (plastic filament with embedded wood dust). The plastic is stronger but the wood is easier to paint and, well, can look like wood. No ladders and brake wheel at this point - they were too fine and didn't print. I could beef them up a little to get them to print, but they would probably look better with after market parts. I could also make them look more like the Precision Masters ones, but I would need some dimensions.
They look great! How much to make 50 bulkheads? (send me a personal message. Thanks) That'll give me two spares after using 48 on my 24 flatcars.
