Is anyone having success with FEFs and Big Boys running on Kato Unitrack with super elevated curves? The track works fine with small diameter drivers on other steam locos or diesels of any size. The radii are the largest Kato offers.
I ran my Big Boy on the V16 set not that long ago with no problems. That's the 480/447 radius set. I know I've run my FEF on it also but it's been awhile, I don't remember any issues.
I have already had to remove a horshoe curve that was 414/381 radius. Replaced the track with Flextrack and cork roadbed. Making an easment with flextrack makes the transition a lot smoother.
I had a problem with my AC-12 Cab Forward from Intermountain, that was the only locomotive that had issues on my test layout that uses the Super elevation curves.
I get my Big Boy back today from Horizon today. They replaced the entire front driver assembly. We will see how it goes now. Their report says it will now negotiate an 11" radius. That will be great for my layout. I have an older FEF3 (838) with factory Loksound and it handles the superelevation fine. My recent purchase of the Greyhoud 8444 version has given me some tracking fits. It may just need more breaking in of the drivers and pivot point on the leading truck.
Kudos for Athearn Service Department. Got my Big Boy back and it runs like a dream. Runs smooth on all radii, up elevations, over bridges and through all switches W I D E O P E N throttle. Thank you Athearn/Horizon Hobby...
