All , As I saw this >Any others really want a Alco RSD-15 ? My thought on this topic. It would be nice to have a decent running updated version of the Old MRC , MP ALCO RSD15. Please see message 3 and 4. Tom
How well scaled were the old ones? Back then, they looked fairly good. (I had one.) Maybe just find shell and put it on a newer chassis?
I saw on another forum where someone claimed Broadway Limited was going to do one. It makes sense since they've done it in HO, but I haven't seen anything official and don't know where the poster got his information.
I too would like to know where the poster received the Information ? Being that I have taken the time to repower a pair of the old MRC, MP ALCO RSD15's with two spare ATLAS RSD12 motors -part No. 420000-. Here is one of my two repowered ALCO RSD15's. Tom
I received an email from TrainWorld yesterday that BLI is releasing RSD-15 and RSD-7 models. Pre-orders due 4/14/22, arriving in September 2022. https://www.trainworld.com/pre-orders.html?manufacturer=26&scale=155&train_type_category=1022
That would be me, I got the information from Jan issue of RMC, full page ad of upcoming releases. BTW Dirk has had some very nice Alligator shells available for about a year. (atsfnscale models. - https://atsfnscalemodels.com) They use a modified Atlas C628 / 630 mechanism. And BTW Bachmann doesn't like it when you post about another manufacturer on their forum. Yep... and I have 3 of the old 1980s runs which were to be repowered. If anyone would like all of them... PM me with an offer.
I didn't think the old shells were too bad, but the handrails were horrible, and the railings were attached to a strip that ran along the walkway, so you couldn't really add better railings without major surgery to fix the edge of the walkway after removing the originals. I always liked the RSD15s I had Waaaay back when, but none of the railroads I now model ever had any, so I'm probably out on this one.
The MRC RSD-15 in Baltimore and Ohio was the first N scale loco I owned. Got it around 1971. Still have it on display. Needs new traction tires, though.
My first MRC B&O wasn't the first N scale loco I ever owned but it was from the early seventies. I bought it on sale at Woolworth's when they were blowing out some discontinued things. MRC had exited the N scale market at the time. It cost $6.95, ran smooth as silk and still does, to this day. Easily one of my most powerful locos, too. I must have about 30 of the old Mehano RSD-15s and i have gotten them to run very acceptably. Doug
The looks of the 'Alligators' remind me of the 1968 Cadillac Eldorado or 1968 Oldsmobile 442. You opened the hood and the motor was 3.5' back from the grill !!!
The Mehano RSD-15 had both trucks powered, right? Unlike their C-240 with just one truck powered and a want to wobble as it sputtered down the track. I had a low hood Mehano RSD-15 in BN that ran pretty well, broken step and all. Sold on eBay long ago.
Yes, the MRC RSD-15 has the larger, double-ended motor to power both trucks and also had, revolutionary to us N scalers, at the time, directional lighting! Later iterations, imported by others, didn't have the directional lighting. Wobbling always an issue with the Mehano locos, due to non-concentric tires, holes not drilled exactly on-center in the wheels, crooked axles, or tire grooves not concentric. Once in a while, you'd get one that didn't wobble. I worked out ways of negating the wobbling. Doug
Dssafan (Tom), Sorry not to get back to you sooner. I have been on a penance for Lent which just ended. Basically I was not to buy, sell or discuss any model trains since Ash Wednesday on March 2nd. I have to get back to the train room to find those RSD15 units. They might not be running since my plan was to repower them. Depending on condition I will let you know... give me a few days to evaluate them.
So here are the three RSD15 units I have. I have not tested them out... and prefer to sell them cheap in "as-is" condition. They are undecorated, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe 'flavors'... and have Micro-trains couplers. So I think $15.00 each ($45.00) would be fair, and, I will pay shipping within the lower 48 states. I accept ZELLE and PayPal friends and family.
That’s perfect ! I have some dash 8 frames and a couple different 3 axle Atlas trucks as well as a U28 Mintrix close to fitting under this shell , this should keep me out of trouble for some time .
