From today in Columbia, SC, UP power leading on NS 238 en route to Charleston, SC. The lighting was poor, with the sun directly on the locomotive's nose and casting both slides in shadow. Oh well, I've seen very few UP locomotives, so it was fun to see them. I looked up UP's roster and I think the 8593 is an SD-70ACe.
Must have been empty hoppers. Only one locomotive on about 50 cars. It seems rare around here in these days of "Precision Railroading". Heading south out of Hearne toward Houston.
Setting a world record in bad photography is this morning's shot in Columbia, SC of NS 1071, the CNJ unit. Rather than get no shot, I settled for this at least. I'm hoping that it gets an assignment that frees it from its imprisonment between the 4150 and 4374 before it leaves town. Having now found the CNJ, I've seen all but the CR. NS operates 20 Heritage Units, though the SOU remains sidelined after a derailment. The CNJ's tangerine and blue scheme was borne of post-war optimism and appeared on much of the CNJ's new road power into the early 1950s. Sadly, the road's fortunes began a rapid slide and the attractive colors were replaced with somber deep sea green.
That CNJ scheme is purtee!!! I have only caught a couple NS heritage units, the Monongahela and Interstate unit, if I recall.
Oh, man. I think I see a train ahead. I may have to stop and watch it go by. I love being a foamer. Out in the Brazos Bottoms not far from the ghost town of Port Sullivan, Texas.
Well, the CNJ went north on this morning's 12R in trailing position. I could hear the train's horn miles away when I got home from church, so no picture. Oh well, at least it wasn't leading. It's headed some 600 miles north to Harrisburg, PA. It's been my experience that NS sometimes cycles the HUs over the same route several times, so maybe I'll get another chance.

Went out after lunch to hunt elusive CSX F784 and capture a shot I have in mind. I parked the car and almost instantly heard the crossing gate bell. Yikes! Having perhaps 10 seconds and not able to get to my spot, I pulled my camera from the bag, adjusted the settings and shot this picture. I'm glad I got a shot, but I wish the train's appearance hadn't been "wasted". Oh well, tomorrow is another day.
A rare CP eastbound coal train on the BNSF KO Sub enters the switches to tie down in the old GN yard in Minot, ND at last light. I missed the head end...
Had to make a quick trip to and from Billings for work, no time for the train store. But On the way home i was able to catch a couple of trains, The first was just east of Pompey's Pillar headed west with oil and a CN unit on the rear as DPU, Then at Forsyth, I had a happy catch of a mixed freight landing in the yard,
