Growing up, I had an aunt who was into buying, fixing up, and reselling old houses. Back in about 1990, she bought an old farm house just outside Ringgold GA. Don't know the whole story but the place was bought as is and included all the contents of the house. While going through the stuff, she found an envelope of 8x10's of steam engines and a flyer for a steam excursion on the Grand Trunk. I scanned this envelope of pictures the other day with mixed results but thought I would go ahead and share them as they are pretty neat. These pictures have been in my collection now for 30ish years and I have no idea who the photographer was. If I did, I would certainly give that person all credit for them. Hope you all enjoy them. 6323 is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum, but all three of the locomotives in your first post are scrapped. 5629 was cut up in 1987 after Metra absorbed the Rock Island commuter routes in Chicago. The locomotive was stored on-property. If anything is a crime against railroading, it's scrapping a surviving steam locomotive.
That's awesome! A real snapshot of history. A steamy snapshot. There are some good photos of some of the best steam the GTW/CNR system had. Those beasts were balanced and tweaked like Swiss watches. Thanks for sharing that great treasure trove!
I just looked up the National Museum of Steam Propulsion, and other than another tract like this one referring to 6323, I can't find a single thing about it. I suspect it's more than likely that since the 1960s, it changed names at least once, or was dissolved. It seems that they were interested in steam tractors too.
