Just picked up a classic Muir Models Kit . So which comes first-gluing or staining? Oil based stained wood will not bond with white glue and white glue residue will repel stain. Trying to apply the correct amount of glue to prevent squeeze out is tough when working with small scale dimensional lumber, even when using a needle point applicator. Any thoughts on wooden kit construction?
@Dampfloko Definitely stain first. The glue tends to block the wood from absorbing the stain if applied first.
I have built a number of wood kits and all have been stained first. Larger sheets of scribed wood need to be stained on both sides and then laid flat with a weight on them to prevent warping until thoroughly dry. I use Elmers wood glue.
I stain lumber with leather dye/IPA first the glue with wood grade white glue, never had an issue with adhesion.
