Psalm 119:37 (New International Version) begins "Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things ...." and that would include my scenery. My new railroad yet has none and I'm sometimes tempted to leave it that way, i.e. landscaping by @Doug Gosha . Other times, I think I might go all out with this.
When I look at my layout, what do I see? A mess. Better if I just turned off the lights and walked away. Ask me what I used to see? Whatever my imagination served up. Scenery was an option and and not a requirement. I filled in the blanks with ideas of what kind of scenery I'd like to eventually see and where it may work out best. Still in the development stage. One thing is for sure it won't be flat landers scenery. It will need to resemble and this is where it gets difficult. Donner Pass. Nothing but mountain scenery. Perhaps of the Colorado's Rockies, there again Arizona, or Cajon Pass and Tehachapi. If my Dad was still in the present it would resemble the latter and not ladder. Although there certainly would be yard ladders. In all the years I've built layouts I've never been able to match an actual location with my modeling. Trains passing through a desert scene, with the wind kicking up the talc and sand. Or how about all that wonderful (I said sarcastically) L.A. SMOG!! You can't replicate all that without damaging your train equipment. Even when I weather my stuff it looks like a kid got out his crayons and made a mess. One big kid. One big mess. I finally decided it is what it is and I'll put my attention and abilities on Operations. I can come closer to the 1:1 ft scale. Although the trains look pathetic. Sad to say. Did I say all I have is a caricature of the real deal. If not here...I have elsewhere. I better duck and run for cover, Incoming!!
I like it! I can fit a coal mine in there somewhere and I already have several of those Treble O Trains trees to get me started.
A placeholder-something to keep my interest and practice on until I leave Japan and get back to the US…and hopefully more space for the next layout. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The scenery I see in my mind is so much better than what I am capable of producing on a layout. And I keep vacillating back and forth between competing ideas. Paralysis by analysis...
I had to pick 3. Layout scenery looks great on its own, but once a train is moving it definitely becomes the center of my attention.
The third was close but not complete. After lights on there's just an empty table and half clogged shelving. Very little train stuff until bills get paid and maybe I move. Life can be grand.
In my distant past, seemed as though anyone who had Lionel trains, had a styrofoam tunnel as well, at some point.
I don't currently have a running layout, but when I finally get it to that point, I want to be able to suspend my disbelief for a few minutes and convince myself that I am looking at a full size train in a full size environment. That means that for me anyway, the scenery, buildings, etc., are just as important as the trains. IMO, they are all models that need to be done well in order to successfully create the "suspension of disbelief" effect I am going for. Sent from my SM-G973U1 using Tapatalk
Well my terrain will start out with a chiseled, pink look almost like granite (there may be a panther roaming around). Then a blizzard will hit, covering most of the granite with white snow. Then spring will come, thawing the snow, and exposing dirt and rocks. Then the grass, shrubs and trees will grow. Yeah, that's how it will go. In my mind...
