Nothing new this week other than a ton of work so here are a couple from Sumner MS that I took back in July. These are Rock Island rail units now and it sure will be cool if they get a coat of RI paint.

These look small. Not SD40-2? Almost like SD38?

I seem to have acquired an acute case of "Get-there-itis" and just take drive by photos. I really need to stop, get out and take some proper train photos every now and then. I was driving through Hearne the other day and spotted a shiny clean box car parked by the old UP office. Then a train was coming into town from the north along Highway 6 that had some DPUs tucked in the middle.

That's what I was thinking too, former hump units.

    Update; SD38P's, former Southern units!

Looks like it was a former Southern unit but was a high hood SD35 back in those days and was rebuilt into the low nose SD38P it is today. :) Pretty cool.

    Cool and a half!

The SD35 origin makes sense if one looks at the size of the fuel tank. If it were a real SD38, it would be visibly larger.

There's one loco with a lot of history in it.

Awaiting restoration someday at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania at Strasburg. Baldwins were built at Eddystone, PA near Philadelphia.

SW 1 restoration is underway in 2009 at the Orange Empire Railroad Museum. Was able to locate a photo of the completed restoration on their website.

My life didn't revovle around the railroads but I'm still curious. On this SW1 being rebuilt the diesel looks familiar but I must ask. What is the smaller one out front. It appears to be a gas engine. Could it be the starter for the diesel?

Looks kind of like an air compressor to run the brakes.

Is it operable? Or static display?

Fresh crew arriving, (crew van at left), to take this unit from Interbay (BNRR Seattle), down to her train at (Seattle) King Street. Long, long ago:

The SW1 is running on the tracks at the Southern California Railway Museum. Here is a short video I found.

It's been a while since I have posted zero-day material...

The profile of the 1912 Soo Line depot and a couple grain elevators silhouette the predawn glow of blue hour before sunrise. A puddle from the previous day's rain reflects the vivid sky.

I always enjoy seeing the clouds lit by the sun from below this way. A special dawn or dusk treat.
