I clearly remember my first PC. When they became redly available two co-workers brag about getting them. So, next weekend I went out to American TV in Madison. They showed me all they had and I freaked them out. I got a HP 8086 and instead of two 5 1/4 floppy drives I got a hard drive and max memory! Then the monitor wasn't good enough so, I went with the RGB color! And of course I needed a printer - color of course!
Man did that freak out the co-workers and the boss. :):):) I still used it 10 years later when I gave it to a lady with two little kids.

A cheapy smarty phone could blow it away today.

I mistakenly placed a bunch of homemade VCR tapes on a speaker and screwed them up royally. The magnets in the speaker washed out the start of the VCR tapes and left blank gaps through out the tape. No, I'm not going to try to reproduce them. Considered them gone'rs and they took a humiliating trip to the dump.

The layout! Returning to the topic of this thread. The layout is progressing slowly. Having something to do with it's owner. Once again, I'm not sure what will be the verdict considering the house I'm renting, from the kids. Not sure what they are thinking. Sell? They won't find a place for me to live cheaper then this. Put me out in the street? Not likely but it could happen. Times they are a changing.

I've decided not to allow them to stall me out and see how much of the layout I can restore. Wish me luck.

Order confirmations are in on the connectors. That's good news.

Agree! To borrow a phrase from the oil patch:

    Build, baby, build your layout!

George, thanks for the idea. Looks like I'm going to blow you off again.

There is so much to do just to restore the layout. The move wasn't friendly toward the layout. And, I have a situation where I'm hearing Grandpa Rick spends more money on his trains then he does us. That's not true. I've spent more money on my children then I have the layout. i don't think they remember growing up and what things cost back when. It hasn't gotten better...have you noticed.

I have some of those computer quick connects and thought seriously about using them. The wires are smaller then what I'm currently using and it's not really what I want. I'd still need the connectors to make those work. I want the wire joints soldered and I don't want to take anymore time then is required to get the wires hooked back up. The good thing about the heat shrink connectors they will be quick to use and do exactly that.

If I ever have to move again.:censored::censored:..well..:mad:.I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Or I'll take the bridges back out and start all over again. The thing is I'am predicting this will be the last time I take it apart and put it back together again. No energy to keep this up. I'm tired.

Time moves on and my crystal ball doesn't work. If we could see the future I think it would scare the hell out of us.:cautious::mad::mad:

There again I might end using those quick connects. Sit down and go back to basket weaving. If you know what I mean.

Or as I say; "I'll run off that bridge when I get there."

Planning ahead means taking reasonable measures to address likely conditions. Without a RR designed & built to be mechanically separated, quick-electrical disconnects aren't gonna help a whole lot.

But when the situation calls for it, means such as those connectors could be a big help.

Rick had to saw his layout into smaller sections when he moved from Big Bear. He had to put the pieces back together some way...making it 'sectional' now. Thus quick-electrical disconnects would be ideal if he had to separate it again and move it. JMO:whistle:

The experts these guys become when they visit your layout. That's true, what George said. Only the layout was designed to come apart. The problem is the glue I used to install the track welded the joints together. Now, it's Sawzall time. To get it apart.

Then we learned the long piece with the top on it is to heavy to move. So the Sawzall came back out and we ended up with a bigger mess. Cut the top off. As i gritted my teeth and grubled a lot. There has to be a better way to plan these things. Yes! Fixable, but at what cost. $$$'s

I will need to re-cut the sub roadbed for the mainline and attach it to the layout. More restoration then I wanted to do. Thinking now is a good time to...what?

    The fun hasn't started yet.

    Maybe plan a layout with #4 switches/turnouts and 9 3/4" curves?
