Here's one from the archives to kick off this week's Proto fun. One of these days I'll get a better scan of this. Here we see the last unit to be painted Southern and the first to be painted Norfolk Southern.
Myself and two other volunteers from our group in the Houston area were up in Cedar Park this week doing maintenance on our car that we lease to the Austin Steam Train Association. Here are the other two guys discussing our plans for the next day as the sun had set and it was getting cold. I already knew what my big project was in the morning. I was going to do some work on the diesel generator under the car. It was working well as you can see all the lights are working but air filter needed cleaning (it uses oil to trap the dirt) and there was an oil leak around the fuel pump that needed fixing. I accomplished all that and more before heading home yesterday.
From 07/05/1984 at Schneider in northwest Indiana. Two former NYC lines crossed here. That buggy is maxed out on stovepipes.
*Sigh* Late, again. Train #7, the Empire Builder was running about six hours late this day, about thirty years back. This is Monroe, Washington. The spur track at right, with a box car, was formerly the Milwaukee Road's Everett Line junction here, ("Monroe Junction"), with the Great Northern RY. This little stub is all that remains of that once heavily trafficked branch line.
I wasn't familiar with "Alpenglow", so looked it up to find that it's a reddish glow seen on mountain tops before sunrise or after sunset. I'd heard of "Aspenglow", but wasn't sure of its meaning either, so also checked it to find it's the glow on mountaintops at dawn and dusk. These must be something to behold.
