I have developed an affinity for High Hood locos lately. Saw some images of a GP30 high hood that got my attention. After looking around other than a Shapeways shell nothing has been made that I can find. However there was an article done about doing a Kitbash of one. I was wondering if anyone had a copy they could let go of or at least get the article for me. It was in N Scale Railroading #74 Nov/Dec 2012. Thanks Richard
Have you tried contacting NSR? Shows on their web site that a back issue is still available. https://nscalerailroadingmagazine.com/wp-content/backissues/backissues.html
Thanks. Yeah I just found that last night. I was thinking I already had the issue but for the life of me I can't put my hands on it. And I know as soon as I buy it it will be "Oh there it is!" LOL Later Richard
Thanks John. I have a couple high hood shells to use. I also have a couple GP 30s. The GP 30 had a very distinctive cab roof. I have an idea how to proceed just was gonna use the article to see if I was right. Biggest problem I see is the "peak" of the roof needs to be moved back a scale foot to make it right.
I have never seen a production high hood model done in N Scale. Need to see if I can scare up some info on it. Later Richard
There was a company that went by the name of Raintree Poducts that produced a cast resin HH GP30 shell. That was years ago though. These pop up on ebay from time to time. I've never seen one up close to be able to comment on the quality.
I have come a couple mentions of that shell. I was made for the older Roco/Atlas chassis . Not sure how it would fit the newer Atlas/Kato chassis. But If I run across 1 before I build mine I might check it out. I won't give FEE Bay any of my business since I got burned as a seller and buyer several years ago. Later Richard
Here's my n scale high hood GP30. Many years ago I ran across a non-functional brass unit on the evil auction site. I managed to win it for a semi-reasonable price since it didn't run. I had a stripped Atlas GP30 drive, so I ground it down so I could fit insulation into the brass shell to keep it from shorting everything out. This didn't allow for a motor in the chassis so it runs as a dummy. The stripped Atlas trucks roll fairly freely, so with three or so powered units everything runs fine.
