Windings have separated from commutator. Kato part number is 926050 Their website says Out of Stock and a Google search produced nothing in terms of a replacement or substitute. Anyone know of a substitute motor Thanks, John
Would you be interested in a motor that is identical but does not have the extension for the flywheel? You will notice that the Kato motor is a straight wound 5 pole. This replacement is a 5 pole skew wound motor. When my phone charges up enough I'll post a picture of the Kato motor (in a decapod) and the replacement motor close to it for comparison. See below:
Thanks for the reply Alister. Someone in another forum mentioned this one and said it was a later replacement: https://www.ebay.com/itm/3538140594...1291&msclkid=b8e26bbb146911c32f3808092c95b0af The flywheel would have to be transferred from the original one. I am assuming that cannot be done with the one you have. Is that correct? John
Thank you Alister. Really appreciate the offer. I'll post back when the replacement motor arrives. Regards, John
Motor arrived today. Fits perfectly. Transferred flywheel and driveshaft coupler. Like new again even though there is more of a whine in the new one than in the original. I can live with that. Thanks for everything. John
I have bigger problems than the whine. There is a thumping going on (chattering?). It thumps down the track. I have disassembled it three times and I can't get rid of it. If I put a 9V battery under the idler gear wheel I can feel it as the motor turns. I can live with the whine, but this is intolerable. The flywheel was difficult to press onto the replacement motor so I had to bang it on with the other end of the shaft resting on a bunch of rags. There is some play in the motor shaft fore and aft but it seems to stay put when the worm gear, bearings, coupler, and the two plastic keepers are in place. I taped down the top weight so there was no play in it. The two worm gear bearings may be in wrong. Does the smooth part go face up or to the sides? The assembly doesn't come out easily. I have to tap the casting upside down to dislodge it. Anyone have any ideas or should I start a new thread? Thanks, John
I don't think the bearing orientation would make a big difference. I've oriented those both ways among the many locos that use them. The thump could be a gear issue. if it were a Bachmann, I'd suspect a split gear, but that is no Bachmann. Are you sure all the driver wheel gears and idlers are nesting properly?
I was definitely coming from the gears. They were binding when the rods were straight across. I managed to free them up with a further teardown so they are much quieter. The bearings on the worm gear measure exactly the same in both dimensions. They are square so it doesn't matter which way they go. So far it seems to be working out. Interesting teardown. Not as bad as a Bachmann steamer I tore down. If I have to I guess I will go after the idler gear and the two drive gears which means separating the two halves. Let's hope not. After tearing it down several times I ended up finding a video which would have helped a lot. Here it is for future reference. Thanks for the help. John

Just remember, when you have to tap on one end of an armature shaft, installing a flywheel or whatever, place the other end of the shaft against a hard surface so it is supported. Otherwise, you can drive the shaft through the armature core which is bad. Doug
