    RSD-15’s on display for this Santa Fe publicity photo taken at Frost on the 1st District, Los Angeles Division. The mainlines cross each other at this point. This class of locomotives were manufactured in 1959-1960. Not only did the "Alligators" get the "transition" paint scheme between the zebra stripe and the book end, but Santa Fe's other new C-C motors, the SD24s shown on the fly-over did as well. The paint scheme did not last long before the locomotives were repainted. Santa Fe photo.

    The reason for the realignment was that things like this kept happening. You would think the yard masters making up trains would know the train was going over Cajon Pass with all its grades and tight curves and not put empty cars in the middle. Chard Walker photo.

    Still happens to this day all across the country. All railroads have curves and grades - long empty cars within a train will always be the weak spot when trailing tonnage draws the train's 'string' tight. Classic 'stringline' derailment.

    Possibly.
    However, timetables from the late '60s show that the section of the Texas Chief which served Houston only paused for about ten minutes - at around 8 AM or 8 PM - on its way between Gainesville and Galveston.

    Seen across the platform is the Houston section/connection for the MP Texas Eagle.
    Terminating and originating in Houston, it arrived at about 11:30 AM and departed at about 3:40 PM.
    Likewise, the ATSF California Special arrived at about 8:15 AM and departed at about 6:45 PM.

    Therefore, it would seem more likely that these are sections of the Texas Eagle and the California Special laying over and awaiting their mid-afternoon and early evening departures.

    I don't think so. I agree that's probably the California Special. Yes, the Texas Chief was down to a coach or two to Galveston. That said, the roundhouse was in Galveston, so the Santa Fe tended to run all the diesel units on down there. Six thousand horses to haul a baggage and a coach was a bit extreme, but it happened. 2,750 horses was more the Special's speed.

    But the MoPac train probably isn't the Eagle. It's probably the New Orleans train that once forwarded a Santa Fe Pullman from California on to the Crescent City. Those trains offered a reasonably convenient connection even after the through car was withdrawn.
