Anyone know of an LHS in the upper dessert area of So Cal? Me and the wife are moving from Aus to Apple Valley later this eyar and I need somewhere to appease my addiction. The Victorville, Apple Valley, Hysperia (Hysteria?? ) region, specifically, would be best. Gonna build me a railroad room this time!
Probably closest to Long's or Train Quest in Moreno Valley +/-90 minutes each way. You do get the thrill of driving down/up Cajon Pass every time. Don't forget that Morongo Valley or Joshua Tree is also high desert, and much closer to Palm Springs and Moreno Valley...
I do not think there are any in the high desert. Longs in Moreno Valley is probably 45 minutes If you are up for the hour drive check out Milepost 38 in Anaheim off the 91 or the Whistle Stop in San Dimas. Not to bad of a drive during non-rush times. I commuted up and down the hill for a long time. Good luck and welcome to the high desert.
I have a friend from Hesperia who says there's a shop in town, but apparently the train department is the size of a phonebooth or two.
I also have a buddy who lived in SLO, and said a shop called 'Central Coast Trains' is a sweet shop. LHS . Good luck! EDIT: I misread the question... Sorry! I guess I can't help you there...
hmm...Moreno Valley. Sounds like its named after a sheep (Merino!). Ahh, Dave...you're really showing you know the area with that "up and down the hill" phrase...only locals call it 'the hill'. You know the area and your telling me to hit the 91? Ye gods.... No train store is worth parking on a freeway for 4 hours Not as bad as the 90, but bad enough. I have in-laws living in Anaheim, so maybe we could make a day of it....or a weekend and go visit disneyland (woohooo!). Derek, he give you a location for the store in Hysteria? You can fit a lot of n-scale in a phone booth!
Know the hill well! I was sentenced to live one year in VIctorville by my company! Good people, just da@! hot!
I asked my friend, he said the place is on Main Street in Hesperia but he couldn't remember the name. I was curious so I did a quick Yahoo search and found a site with some probably helpful info: http://www.highdesertinsider.com/html/shopping2.html If you scroll a ways down there's a box for "Hobby Shops" including S & M Trains & Hobbies at 16005 Main St. There's a couple other hopeful looking places on there... Of course I couldn't tell you anything about the places but they're probably worth a shot. My friend was never a big train guy but he says he's been to all those...say S & M is probably the best and the others are mostly RC stuff. Good Luck
Victorville, hot? Nahhhhh. Rarely breaks 105F, which is a good day to take a 5 mile run. Compared to where I live in Aus, the summer temps are pretty mild, but boringly regular. Here it ranges from 32-45F from day to day in summer (thats 90-115 or so). Hey, at least they have 3 big Wal-Marts in close proximity (<drool>...I miss walmart). S&M.....sounds kinky. Thanks a lot Derek. Much appreciated. Gonna send some of the wifes relatives over to check em out
I was just out on Cajon last Saturday and I KNOW I saw a Train based Hobby shop somewhere I want to say in Victorville, but I went all the way to Barstow, so it could have been anywhere. Didn't go in though. Next weekend I might go up to Tehacapi.
