For those who may not be aware our own Flash Blackman was featured in an article in NSR for weathered freight cars. There are some excellent examples of how to weather different types of freight cars. Today I'm planning on weathering some freight cars and will post some pics here in the next few days. I thought I'd start this thread to encourage everyone to post some pics of their best efforts, Look forward to seeing some photos
I've got to get a better camera. First one is a Chessie Covered hopper still riding around without CSX markings. Looks like it's been to the flour mill more than once lately. Next is a CSX Coal Hopper still with WM markings that has seen better days. The last one is a St. Mary's Railroad boxcar. I need to get an airbrush and a better camera, these cars look good but the camera is out-of-date.
Thanks Pat they look excellent, i have already weathered 15 boxcars this morning and hoping to post pics soon.
i have a handful of Railbox boxacars that are currently getting grafitti jobs. They should be done in the next few days.
I have just completed weathering 17 tank cars and 15 boxcars. I used different chalks then hairspray to seal them. Pictures in a few hours.
Ok then.....What's the easiest/best way to weather covered hoppers - IM, Precision Masters - or the cylindrical hoppers - IM, Micro Trains etc??? I've got between 60 and 75 of them that I gotta weather, someday!! Have a number or MDC, Atlas and MT tanks that need weathering also. Same as above, what, how etc...? Would like to attempt a sulphur? tank - Black tank with yellow splattered all over the top and down the sides?? If it wasn't 1:45Am, I'd get a couple shots of some of my weathered cars, and locomotives! Info appreciated. Thanks
Paul, Marty, and Pat - Great work guys. Your layout scenery looks really good too Marty! I wish more people would start posting, enjoy seeing what ya all are doing.
Thanks Tom I'm really pleased with the results of weathering these cars. I recall when I first started modelling the last thing I wanted to do is weather those nice new cars but now I have it makes the whole scene look so much more realistic.
Good work Paul and you other guys It is amazing just how much difference it makes to the realism, with just a little weathering. I am looking forward to starting my new layout, and getting the stock weathered.
Very nice Colonel. A little grime really brings that train to life. P.S. I saw your new flat car, that Alan produces, it looks good. You did a great job on the transformer load too!
Thanks Red for your comments and yes I'mpleased with the depressed flatcar. Hoss, Thats a good question I may weather with chalks but not seal it. I love my MOPAC units and not sure whether I could permanently weather them lol but yes I guess all my locomotives need to be weathered.
one little thing Paul.... The white on the tank cars is REALLY white. How many tank cars have you seen with virginal white lettering on them? Minor point..otherwise its neato.
