SOme of us like a little background music while either working on models or running trains. On the Frisco's Spring River Sub, the radio is either tuned to a classic-rock station (to get my Ozzy, ZZTop, and Who fix) or an alt-country station (KHYI-FM, 95.3 The Range) which plays absolutely NO slick NashVegas pop-country. True, 'tis odd to hear a group called the Derailers while running trains, but it's ol' fashioned Texas country, and a refreshing change when I wanna listen to something other than classic rock.

So I guess my question is this- of those of you who have music playing in the background, what do you listen to- radio, CD, tape? If radio, what type of music (or even talk radio)?

One interesting bit of local trivia- the FM country station out of Denison, TX is KMKT-FM, 93.3, Katy Country, and is operated in the Katy passenger depot in downtown Denison. KHYI-FM, as I mentioned before, runs in the Wells Fargo building in Plano next to the KCS main line and Central Expressway.

I listen to a LOT of Johnny Cash, mostly taped from my old vinyl LP's. :D

Also, same thing as far as Flatt & Scruggs, Osborne Bros., Stanley Bros. and other traditional bluegrass. :D

Sometimes George, Merle or Waylon. :D

    NEVER today's Nashville crap.

    regards / Mike

If I'm running it is usually taped steam engine sounds, or songs like "the Orange Blossom Special", but if I'm just working it is usually old WW I Ompapa, mostly German, which I have enjoyed all my life. I know, strange, but its what you grow up with! :D

I mainly listen to an AM Oldies but Goodies station. When I get tired of the same old stuff and too many commercials, I tune to a best of the 70's and 80's FM station. I usually only stay with that for a short time because the station has too many commercials. I used to listen to tapes of my old LPs but the tape player broke and I haven't wanted to spend the money to replace it.

Mike- right on with the Johnny Cash!

I listen to either the radio (classic rock), or CDs in a changer in my train room. If it's CDs, there's quite a few bands/artists I listen to, including U2, Zepplin, Radiohead, Grandaddy, Chili Peppers, Nick Drake, Coldplay, stuff like that. I'm sure a lot of guys are reading this, saying to yourself "who the heck are those people?" [IMG]

Anyway, good topic. It's always good to know a little more about all you guys than just train related topics.

Usually the local AM Classic 1950's, 1960's Rock-n-Roll. It's hard to listen to the Rock station. Their programming mix is amateur at best.

 Good question! It all depends on what layout, an what room you might be talking about in general.. At home in my train room, if I'm running its train sounds from CD's, or tapes.... An other times could go from Elvis Presley to god only knows what (I grew up on the Oldies) and listen to everything Rock & Roll so...

At the club, it can again be the oldies on a work session, or a fun run between members. Durring a show... its train sounds..... And nothing but... blaring away....

In the shop, it can be a CD from Metallica to Ozzy, or the radio station (which I can't seem to recall the station destination at the moment) that plays new hits, thats an 80's Rock based station....

Ditto on Cash- I had a listen to his latest CD "The Man Comes Around" on The Range.

Other groups I like to listen to are Cross Canadian Ragweed, The Derailers, BR5-49, Cooder Graw, CDB, Marshall Tucker Band, and Jerry Jeff Walker.

For classic rock, it's Ozzy, ZZTop, The Who, Jethro Tull, The Police, Eagles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fabulous Thunderbirds, .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchett.

And even tho I like Willie, Waylon, Gary P. Nunn and Robert Earl Keene, it don't matter who's in Austin- Bob Wills is STILL the King!!! [IMG]

Rock mostly from '76 - '80... goes well with the period of Frisco that I'm modelling and sets the mood nicely!

As those of you who may remember previous threads about musical tastes may recall (there was an interesting topic about railroad related records about a year ago), my tastes are the blues, so I go along with Andy Kramer - Muddy, the Wolf, Sonny Boys I and II, Jimmy Rogers (NOT the yodelling brakeman but one half of the guitar duo (he and Muddy) who backed many of the best Chicago blues recordings of the early 50s) (The Aces were also superb as a backing band as were Robert Jr Lockwood and Luther Tucker with any of the 3 or 4 drummers who appeared on most Chess records from that time and of course Willie Dixon on stand up bass (he must be one of the few people playing string bass who was bigger than the instrument he was playing!)); also Little Walter, Junior Wells, Elmore James, B B King; very early Fleetwood Mac, Canned Heat from the late 60s (saw them at the Albert Hall in 1970!), Robert Johnson, Barbecue Bob, Papa Charley Patton, Skip James, SRV, Rod Piazza and many many others - this is IF I had a train room and IF I listened to music in it - in reality I listen to most of my music in the car, in bed at night on my Walkman or in the living room when home alone and I can play it at the proper volume (and educate the neighbours!)

Nice to hear someone knows who I'm listening to [IMG] Nick Drake is probably (and most unfortunately) best known for his song on a recent VW ad- the pink moon song "pink pink pink pink.. pink moon..." His songs are like that one, but mostly not as traditional in structure. Kinda free-flowing, mostly him & a guitar, that sort of thing.

    Anyway...
