    Yes, we had this little building challenge going over on the atlas forum, with a due date of showing our work the week of June 13th...which we obvoiusly cannot do there due to circumstances.

    All the same, I know we all still have our kits...mine is half finished of course...and we are all dying to show them.

    So how about we do the exhibition here, in the Inspection Pit, this next week starting the 13th?

    Later dudes.

    Too bad the whole thing didn't start here in the Inspection Pit, this would have been awesome to see the different approaches in each scale!

    All the same, we have something like 3-5 days to finish everything...Good Luck!!!

    Here we go guys, I hope more people who participated in this thing find their way to the thread...andybody here who also is in this might want to put a little advertisement out that this is going down here....it seems most of the HO bunch have gone back into their caves...

    <H1>The Waterworks</H1>

    Above all other utilities, even electricity, it the waterworks. This single utility makes life possible.

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Waterworks2.jpg>

    Here is the yard office. Most patrons usually see the water department counter down at City hall where they pay their bills, and they come here for specific problems with their water service.

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Office1.jpg>

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Office2.jpg>

    This is the Yard Shop, where quick jobs are done with those machines available on site.

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Shop1.jpg>

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Shop2.jpg>

    This last structure is a bit bigger...

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Tower1.jpg>

    Yes, look up there...

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Tower2.jpg>

    It was built out of a Model Power tank, A lifelike Coal Tipple, some pieces from MDC/Roundhouse, and a few minor pieces including pieces of the parts trees from an Atlas Switch tower Kit.

    This water tower is primarily set up for use with the city fire protection in such places as fire hydrants, though it is also tapped for a variety of other funtions. The city is working on getting a third structure to protect a bigger pump on the well head structure, in order to intercept the anticipated growth boom.

    Work vehicles on hand include two tank trucks, though the department is on the market for a ten wheel truck to carry the white tank. When a new truck is found to carry the water tank, this truck will be rebuilt as a flatbed in order to support the well drilling truck, which is also in the shop under construction. The smaller truck, though showing it's age, still provides important service such as dust knocking or water deliver to those regions where water is needed when a well is out of service.

    <img src=http://img1.photobucket.com/albums/0903/kaurb/Waterworks1.jpg>

    I have not exactly finished everything, as the minor details show, I still have to do the powerline work, and the conections there that are necesaryr, but at the same time I didn;t do these because the placment and such of this industry are entirely subjective ot the layout they end up on.

    I also have to do a set of decals for this place, which remains undone because I am still slacking when it comes to getting into that kind of technology...someday!

    I am using many of the brick pieces for walkway and such, and there is quite a lit of clutter left in the Atlas kit that ould make nice paincan lids and other scrap that would be lying around a Waterworks.

    And the rest of the parts are also going towards scenery materials. I didn't want to put that together though, for obvous reasons. I do have a large number of details I want to use with this place, including boxes, tools, scrap, chainlink/wood board fences, well head structure, and a pipe rack. At this point, I Also have to still add small details like the raingutters and the rainbarrels.the scrap is scrap though, and there seems to be a lot of it!

    Jon,
    Super job!!!! I like how the first few photos show the clutter before adding the weeds and vegitation. It takes a few tries to learn the sequence that makes the clutter look as though it's been there a while. Did you discover that after taking the photos you found areas which didn't look quite as good as you expected? Cameras are good at finding those, probably because they don't forgive like our eyes and brains do. Still it's a super little scene though, good job!! [IMG]

    Thanks 2slim,

    you're 100% spot on.

    The original pics showed the ground colour to be far too dark for the Belt Railway, so I stripped the detailling off and repainted the lot in a concrete colour.

    Pics are a very good way of spotting errors and omissions and digital cameras are a godsend - no developing, etc.

    Concrete coloured texture paint with WS light gray ballast sprinkled on while it was still wet.

    Once dry I covered the lot in a thin wash of acrylic earth brown, which darkened up the ballast.

    I am not a professional photographer. I am not even a non-professional photograher. I try to model as well as I can in N scale. The only picture of my Atlas signal tower is in the right hand side of the shot below. On a blow up, you can see it.

    Hello Chris. Long time no speeky, but I'm still waiting for IHB decals from Walthers. [IMG]

    Coaltrain, you're 100% correct :cool:

    and 100% to blame for the hole in my wallet [IMG] , since you're the one who showed it to me.

    Great stuff though, I'm hooked, just don't expect me to model a large field ;)
