Besides the two 4-8-4's operating in Portland, about 100 miles north in Mineral, WA, the Mt. Rainier Scenic RR had a steam-up, with former Hillcrest Lumber Climax No. 10 and former Hammond Lumber 2-8-2T No. 17 steamed up. Isn't this a beautiful setting? And isn't this some serious machinery? Jim, Thats some serious geared locomotive you got their! Got any pictures of its full side ????? I'd love to see it if so!
It is difficult to have to stay in flat Texas when I love the mountains! Did you get a chance to ride on or behind any of these beauties? Go ahead, give me a lump in my throat, tell me what it was like up there! (envy envy!)
Looks like a vertical boiler in the consist of the first photo Jim .. is that the logging highliner they had on display at the east end of the line?
Bill, last time I was there about five years ago they had it on display at Mineral, which I guess is the east end. Isn't it part of a "steam donkey" used in the logging business? John, I will find a full side view of that engine. Watash, I got to ride behind all four locomotives, the 4-8-4's double heading, while the loggers switched duty. [ 05. Here is a side view of the Hillcrest Climax And a closeup of the valve gear And on the sidelines, didn't run that day, but will run again, the Pickering Lumber Shay No. 11, MRSR Heisler No. 91, and rare Willamette (Shay type) Rayonier No. 2. [ 06. January 2004, 04:45: Message edited by: fitz ]
Sure wish they'd update their web site with a list of other items in the collection. I've e-mailed a couple of questions in the past. Never get an answer. Boxcab E50
Whoa there partner! Did you say Willamette? Now this means that I haven't seen every surviving Willamemete out there. I guess I'll have to go to MRSR one of these days and get this one too.
Jim, GREAT shots of the geared ones! Gotta love the mystery of these loco's, steam an geared, it just don't seem likely till you see one! WOW Ya gotta love the machinery in action, as I'm sure you do!
cthippo, I didn't get this shot enough broadside that you can see the Willamette logo, but it's there. This is Rayonier No. 2. Boxcab, did you get my email message about contacting Martin Hansen? [ 06. January 2004, 04:47: Message edited by: fitz ]
I sent you a private email message here on the board, suggesting that you contact Martin, as I'm sure he has a complete list of the MRSR rolling stock. Email me at fitzrr@pioneer.net
Well, now I know why I didn't receive that mail! I was just emptying my junk mail folder, and guess what I found? Boxcab E50
