I know there are many collectors of insulators. Here are a few in the collection of the Danbury Railway Museum. They are not labeled, so I do not know where they came from or how they were used. [ 03. April 2004, 17:49: Message edited by: Peirce ]
Must all be stuff from AC systems. I have a unique insulator from the Milwaukee Road DC system. At one time, I was searching the web for information. And did find site that had photos of many styles for insulators. Don't have a URL any more. But I wonder if it would turn up with a Google search? Boxcab E50
I have about five telegraph,phone insulators from when they tore out the lines on the old Omaha road!! Three green, two clear.
Judging from their size, Gil, I would make the same guess. The one in the first picture stands about 18 to 20 inches, or more. That is an eyeball estimate.

I have Milwaukee one that was on a main tranmission pole that fell down on Snoqualmie Pass that has brass wrapped around the top half and brass on both sides extending out about 3" were the wire was cut. It is still on the wood dowell that it screws onto. I also have one from west of Kittitas, mint that was laying in the weeds on the old main.
I've got one from a span wire supporting trolley wire above 63rd st here in Chicago. I also have one of the wire hangers which carried the trolley power wire and was supported by one of those span wires and insulators. The hanger still has a piece of copper trolley wire in it. The demolition crew would cut the hangers off from the longer spans of copper trolley wire.

Unique use of insulators as seen on the feet of this chair. This is the former M&ST.L Amboy, MN depot. It is now located at St James, MN I don't know how long this chair has been like this but I would assume its been a long time.
I was in a fire lookout tower one time that had stools with insulators on the legs as pictured above in Dee Das photo. When lighting starts striking around the tower, you were supposed to just get up on the stool! I rescued a few insulators from the recent annihilation through northern AZ. Don't normally bring home too many relics, but these are nice and old, and now grace my barn windowsill. I took a lot of close up detail photos of the poles on the ground too.
