Hi Everyone June 17th, 01. 13:40 Hrs. MDT. I have Noticed the Pictures of the G.T. New (?) 4900s. I'd B Interested to Know where this Numbering Series came From. Reasons - I have some Various Slides/Pictures of the Original G.T. 4900s and some of the C.V. 4500s Units. Both were Geep 7/9s. I also Have these Units Written Up on Both C.N. & C.V. Train Orders on the C.N./C.V. Lines Between Richmond,Quebec and Portland, Me. (C.N.) and Between White River Jct for Points South and North Up to St. Albans and North to Cantic. This Includes Various Train Order Offices like Cantic, St Albans, Brattoboro, Palmer & Others on C.V. and Places like Sherbrooke, Island Pond, North Stratford, Berlin, Danville Jct and Portland to Name a Few on the C.N. Line to Portland, Me. Train Orders and Train Order Offices are No longer Part of the Picture but in those Days it was a Lot of Fun Really to Collect Them. Guess its all M.B.S./O.C.S. or Track Worrents depending on the Railroad. Just My Toonies Worth. Thanks Guys. Andrew, Calgary.
Those 4900's were used where needed in passenger service. Hence the different series. For a while some of the units made it to SEMTA, which was a breif commuter operation in the Detroit area, which the units were numbered into the 900 series. Jon
Hi Jon, June 17th, 01 20:45 Hrs. MDT. Jon - The G.T.W. Low Number 4900s - 4900 to say 4925 were also use in Freight Service as Well on C.V. and G.T. (GrandTrunkEastern) Just to Let You Know. Thanks. Andrew, Calgary. grandtrunkent@hotmail.com
I realize that, they were built as "dual-service" units. They did spend more time on freight service, I have photos in my collection of GTW 4900's pulling the Maple Leaf through the original St Clair tunnel in Sarnia.
The reason they were re-numbered to 4900 series was becasue they used to be GT 5700's and CN has always said in their rule book that all GT power and CN power would be considered the same railroad , for copying train orders ect... Then when CN purchased some new SD75I's , those were numbered 5700 series , so then the company could not have same numbered units operating on the same territory in some places , so then they took the GT 5700's and made them 4900's to make room for the much bigger and better SD75I's which are numbered 5700 series units as well as 5600 series .
