I've now got a total of 5 CP SD90's and was wondering where they're seen on the system. I've seen some pictures of one AC4400 pulling grain cars. Do these big engines ever do single unit duty like that? My layout's not that big and running two of these guys together eats up alot of space. Any comments are appreciated.
They use them here in Medicine Hat even for switching; I think it's because of the 2, long steep grades. I've also seen single units pulling grain and container cars going both east and west. I've also seen them as helper units part way through the length of the train. Hope this helps a little. Jim
They are only occasional visitors around here usually on container trains. Saw #9107 come in town early this aftenoon handling a intermodal train single handed.
Thanks for y'alls help. I'm going to use them by themselves as well unless I'm on a club layout, then they're all together with as many cars as will fit!
Are these manned helpers? Or do they have remote control equipment? Boxcab E50 </font>[/QUOTE]No, I'm afraid they aren't manned helpers but remote contolled. I see allot of CPR stuff as the main line runs right behind our shop; too bad I didn't have the time to take a camera out sometimes as we get about 15 - 25 trains going by each day.
txronharris - I had a quick look at about 200 sightings from the CP Belleville sub, and found about 5 consists with 9100's in them. If you are interested in consists for these, let me know and I'll post a couple. Milne
Thanks Milne. Photos would be really cool if you don't mind posting a few. I was planning on my layout to have them pulling grain trains. I'm guessing they're also used for intermodal and coal hauling as well.

Lots of SD90's through the Fraser and Thompson canyons here in BC. CN runs longer trains less frequently, CP runs shorter trains more frequently.
I'll have to find my photo, but I caught a CP SD90 on a NS train here in Raleigh about 8 months ago! Harold
I've seen a couple dozen, probably. A few weeks ago, I caught a draper taper, 9018, and SD-90/43mac 9114.
Hi MechaMoose and welcome aboard TrainBoard! I have never seen a unit with a Draper taper in person, but maybe one day I'll get lucky Harold
See a great deal of them in the Chicago Area...many parked in Bensenville Yard Northwest Of The City.
I see alot of those units here in Ontario: - expressway with about 50 - 60 cars, always with another unit (which is standard practice on the expressway) - other top priority trains including automobile traffic, the mix being about 20% single unit, 40% both with one other non SD90 or AC4400 and 40% with at least one other SD90 or AC4400. - second priority intermodal, automotive and merchandise trains, the mix being about the same as above. - Very rare to see a train over 100 cars on any of the above trains.
Milne; Is this recent sightings? Last year it was pretty standard to see 3 SD40-2s on the Montreal / Toronto Expressway trains, at least up until the fall. Really hoping tomorrow's weather will be good enough so I can get out for a shoot tomorrow morning, if I do I might be able to catch an Expressway train. The SD90s have been somewhat elusive and I would dearly love to spot one in the camera finder Cheers, Lenny
