Hemi - Your layout is looking fantastic!! Dig those prototype scenes. Did you see that there is a new color Rio Grande book coming out? I saw the ad in the new Trains magazine.
Which book? I don't get Trains mag... Thanks for the kind words.. The proto photo side by side comparisons work nicer than I expected...
New DRGW Book Jeremy, The book Dave is referring to is the Colorado Rail Annual #28 from the CRRM. This is a collection put together by Ron Hill and entitled Rio Grande: Memories of the Final Years. Darn near everyone carries it. Caboose Hobbies had about 50 copies at last count. Happy DRGW N Rails, Ray S MP 10.1 (ARVADA) CO President - Denver Area N Scale Club
This was a great story to follow. I just found this site a few days ago an it is amazing the help and knowledge available. You had me up all night reading where this layout was going to end up. I have one question about the final design. I saw it was finally decided to fit in an average size 2nd bedroom but did anyone factor in that most second bedrooms, at least where I have lived, generally enter from the corner of the room and not the center as this layout came to be? RR
RR, Welcome to TB! In short, No, I had not factored that in. In the event that this layout will not fit in the next house, I'll likely build a door layout or something to tide me over. Either that, or crawl in from the corner, and enter the layout that way! Nah, that's a duckunder. Evil. Duckunders are evil!
As evil as duckunders can be, I see you ducking before settling with the back of a door. Just curious if there are any more updated photos of the great work you are doing. BTW, you have inspired me so much, I plan to steal a lot of your ideas for framing my layout and figure out where it all goes from there. I'll be designing it to fit one of my spare bedrooms but actually build it in the large living room I have. Like you, I am subject to moving and want to make sure it fits in another house. I think I'll put my opening in a corner though. :tb-wink: RR
Not much for updated photos, as no further work on scenery has been done. However, I have a few new shots to share! Train number 709 is climbing the 2% at Tunnel 17, with the Nixon-Axial coal empties following obediently behind: Three fresh SD50's lead #709 out of Tunnel 17's 1,730' of blackness: Here's the real west portal of Tunnel 17--the real tunnel is rifle-bore straight, and curves to reach Tunnel 18, unlike my tunnel which leaves Tunnel 17 on a curve:
If you move the portal just an inch or two wouldn't it "appear" to be coming straight out, creating the illusion it is a straight tunnel. Always great to see more shots of your layout.
I think I'll do that, John. Either that, or rebuild the scenery a bit, to allow a straight entrance to Tunnel 17. Once I get the F45's done, I'm gonna do more scenic work.
To those who have been following this layout build--I have had to move! Yeah, bummer, the layout is in sections, and laying on the floor right now. Just haven't had the time to reassemble it! At any rate, it fits in the new house (just moved 2 weeks ago), and hopefully in the next 2 weeks, I'll have time to put it back together.
A directed move. The housing folks are going to tear down my old house. I got a brand new one! Brand spanking new! No basement, but more living space. Not a bad deal, all things considered. The last 3 weeks have been a huge blur.
Rome wasn't built in a day, but the Tunnel District was ressurrected today. I got it all reassembled, and even built walls around it to keep errant kitties and toddlers out of it when I'm not home. I still have to connect around 2 dozen tracks, and reconnect all the electrical, but that's easy.
