Yup, well we started work on it for paint, and now, after discussion with Chris and Doyal, the former Amtrak #231 will be repainted to Daylight colors. Believe me when I say "Yuck" But, it might come out good, so we'll have to wait and see. Ile try and get pics later if I can.

Sounds to me like more of a long range plan, as the guys at Brooklyn would do. If future excursions are going to be under the auspices of Amtrak, the F40 could serve as the diseasel helper, and she would match the consist at least as far back as engine, tender, aux tender, F40, bag car. Sounds like a progression toward another Daylight matching consist, which would be great. [IMG]

Well, Ive been in school lately, so I havnt made it to the roundhouse in a little while.
Im hoping to make it there sunday to contribute. Ile make it in the pics maybe, but if you look at the 4449 website, it mentions my name, im just never in any photos as chris (Guy who owns the F40, and Camera man) is never around when Im doing something, but i was with them washing all the engines for NRHS.

Well, yesterday, we continued needle gunning the car body of the 231, and the locomotive has already had its first couple coats of red painted on her. Im in the middle of wire brush wheeling the grab irons so they are bare metal. Ile tell you for being as old as they are, they are cleaning up real nice.

    Ile keep you all informed.

    I have to ask.....
Is there a reason to do the repaint in spots, as opposed to doing all the stripping, all the priming, all the base coat, all the .....?
It's just I've never seen a paint job done in patches before. Doesn't this cause a blending problem?

Thats a good question and the answer is that we had allready started needle gunning the front (Refer to pictures on given website above) and the rear, but left it bare metal. It takes alot, more then I wanna count of man hours just stripping the car body of its old paint. So, the best thing to do was do it in patches since it is not under a shed or in the roundhouse itself. This way, the car body doesnt rust, and all the hard work goes down the drain. As so far as blending, we are going to do our best in blending it right, but after the entire car body is painted its first coat of red, we can sand it down and give it a full car body coat again, making it look right. Does this help?

Ugh! Needle scalers. Oh boy do I have a lot of hours experience with those machines. Real wrist numbers!

I think the Daylight paint will be great. Am looking forward to seeing it roll out of the shop. All shiny and new!

Well, the day it rolls onto the turn table from the round house with be the first fire off.
Everythings ready except the prime mover still has to be perfectly centered. Plus we need EMD Traction Motor Cables.

Well, shees had an almost complete coat of red to the car body and wow does it look strange. Never have i seen a red F40.
Theres a side that has about 4 panels (not painted red but still in amtrak colors) that Bondo can not fix. Just tooo badly rusted away. They will need some sheet work.

And good news! Im down to the last three grab irons to sand blast and wire brush!!!

Well, good news to me anyway, spent about 4-5 hours on em already.

Well, we cleaned up the left side pannels, coated the spots that are in contact with the car body frame with Hammeright paint. This will protect from rust and corrosion. Now that that is just about done, we will be ready for yet another coat of Red, then we'll continue with the silver black and orange. Now, how would i go about welding Daylight side skirts onto this thing? :D
