New here. I am making anticlimbers from styrene and I have been trying to find pictures(up close) especially from underneath. I also need pics of all the piping underneath the sills. It would be nice to know where all those conduits start and stop. I think I might be asking for to much, but then I might get lucky.
damz68: Here's a good photo of NS GP50 #7079: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=22009 It's a medium-sized triangular anticlimber, and the Athearn GP50 Phase-I shell comes with those-- The only modification you have to make is the notches cut on the bottom on the fireman's side of the anticlimber for pilot-mounted MU receptacles. As far as all the piping under the sills go, Details West has an excellent page on detailing the underbody of an NS GP60... Not sure if it's similar or very different to that of a GP50 though. Cannon & Co. makes just about every anticlimber variant out there; why not just use the 50-series anticlimber (or more accurately in this case, walkway extension) he makes? http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/191-2105 It's standard equipment on many 50-series, some late Dash-2s, and MP15ACs. You'll have to cut in the MU clearance notch, but that's nothing an xacto and files can't handle. As for all the piping and cables, you'll have to work from photos, since different locomotives can have different arrangements. Details West makes a nice EMD air tank and piping kit ( http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/235-304 ) that can cover some of the underbody detail. As for pics, afraid I can't help you there - I haven't been able to photograph any NS GP50s out here in Socal (at least, the ones I've seen weren't sitting still!).
Damz68: The two websites I usually hit first when researching a prototype diesel loco would be Railroad Picture Archives.net, and Railpictures.net. Their addresses: www.rrpicturearchives.net and www.railpictures.net. They have more GP50 photos than you can shake a stick at, and I'm sure there are at least one or two with the shots you need. If I was in your shoes, I'd start with an Athearn GP50 Phase I shell (which has the right anticlimbers and the beaded blower cover SOU/NS GP50s have), then add the visible details. Some of the details such as those deep under the sidesills (traction motor cables, etc.) are hardly visible and I can't really justify spending extra money or effort on them. Good luck!
