I was told about this site over on another group (Frisco, at Yahoo!Groups), and it's a great site for finding out where your favorite RR RoW goes, and how to either chase, pace, or set up for railfanning: Google Maps You can center in on a spot in the USofA, zoom in, and drag the map along to see where the tracks & roadways go. I just found a way to trace the RoW for my freelanced MoKan RR (an ex-Frisco line in SE and southern Kansas). I can also see where something like this would come in handy for railfanning trips....
Thanks for the link. That's an excellent service, and very up to date. On the down side, it's disappointing to see how many RoW's have been abandoned and torn up that the general public rarely hears about....
Thanks! I can finaly _show_ people how to get to my place. There are 2 intersections which if you zig when you should zag you are SOL.
Excellent interactive map! Interesting following the twists and turns of the Tehachapi route (still listed as Southern Pacific)
I have been using TerraServer for satellite images for a while: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/ It really helps you understand the RoW, especially in yards or places you have not been. Harold
I thought these were only high altitude aircraft photos. Still very useful even if most of the photos only go back to the mid 1990s. About the Photos [ April 13, 2005, 04:31 PM: Message edited by: r_i_straw ]
Another benefit of TerraServer is the ability to locate and follow old rights of way where the track had been pulled 40-50 years ago.
