I have noticed some pictures have a copyright on them, and some do not.

I understand what a copyright is, for the most part

but why put it on pictures and is this something I should do or be concerned about?

And if so do just put copyright year/date my name/ location and so forth like I have seen others do, or is there specific information that should be placed on the photo?

Is it I just put said text on the Photo or do I need to some legal thing somewhere?

I understand that it deals with coping the photo and that I have to have permission to use said copy publicly what else dose this copyright protecting include?

I know its is a lot of questions but I have been meaning to ask as I do have a lot of pictures posted on my web site, and I am curious if this is something I need to do

In terms of your pics, it depends how much you value them. I don't mark my images, but my site states the copyright info.

Having it printed on the pics makes it harder for someone else to use as if it were theirs. For example www.rr-fallenflags.org has in the past had the images on the website "harvested" and sold as CD's full of reference materiel on Ebay, with no reference to the owner of that site, or the photographer!

Personally I don't mind folk using my pics for personal use, and have never said no to anyone who asks, but I would be annoyed if someone used my pics to make money for themselves without even having the courtesy of contacting me.

Sadly there are folk out there who think that because they pay to access the internet, they have the right to use anything on it in whatever way they like. I know that sounds strange, but I've really come across folk who believe it!

Sorry, it also gives you better proof if anything went legal.

Well I would not be happy about some one making money off of something I did either as far as sharing for personal use I do not have a problem with.

Like you, I have copyrights posted on my website so that some of the images, animations and such I have used that belong to others like they asked me to when I got permission to use those images.

I had wondered about Fallen Flags web site when I first started on the forum it was one of the more prominent places to be directed to due to his extensive archives of fallen flag related info and pictures.

One thing I have found is that if I save a pic to my picture file on my computer for modelling purposes, it helps me to know where it came from, in case I want to revisit the site. It's a lot harder to do that, if there's nothing written on the pic.

Having said that I don't mark mine on Rail Images - maybe we should start. I'm keen to see what other comments and suggestions come out of this . Maybe we are too trusting.

Yikes, if I started, I would have 300 images to re-post after editing in the copyright stuff... Call me lazy, and anything but late for dinner, but I'm not that ambitious...

I guess I posted my images with Copyright info for a couple of reasons: #1 was to deter (not stop) folks from using my images to make $$ for themselves; the 2nd reason is I use it to include the date and place the photo was taken.,...

Let's face it, if folks want to steal your images, they'll "scrub" them and re-sell them; however, if/when you do catch them, you'd have some recourse available.
