If there was any one reason I got bitten by the 'bug' she would be it. Chased her all over around with my dad at Railfair '91 in Sacramento when I was 6... IF only they could get an excursion down the Coast Line where she belongs Have fun!!! Awesome shot
Dang it dang it dang it. I would have been there if it weren't for this gosh darn employment I procurred. First Mt. St. Helen's get's interesting, then 4449 heads by my favorite trainwatching spot. No job is worth this. That's it, I quit. I'm moving back to Portland.
Michael, nice shot, as are the others posted in other places. We got home today. Don't know what I got on film, but my wife did a nice Ted Curphey-like job with our wuthless digital cam, train coming across Lake Pend Oreille on the morning of Oct. 10. Not waiting for people or vehicles to clear, got this one servicing the engine at Paradise, MT, same day, just before launching into semaphore country..
I got my prints back today. This was the primary objective of the chase. Catch at least one semaphore. I wanted to get her splitting two, but was scared off by internet traffic of the crowd expected at Donlan. This was between Paradise and St. Regis, MT, at MP 210.3. Got this one while the wife was using the digital, train just out of Sandpoint crossing Lake Pend Oreille. If anyone is interested, I have more.
Running through Thompson Falls, MT, amid the fall colors. She's a fall color, too. She spent all of Oct. 9 "hiding on the siding" at Sandpoint. On Friday, Oct. 8, she was lit up well running through Washington. That Jack Wheelihan is one fine fireman. No smoke.
I have worked on alot of steam engines, and operated several different types, but none hold as high a spot in my heart as 4449. Class, style, beauty, a ton of history behind her, she has it all. Thank you all for sharing the photos!
So close to me, yet so far away. Oh well, load those pictures! I'll have to do my chasing via Trainboard! Boxcab E50
Satokuma, I love the shot in the fog - very atmospheric Bob, I also love your wife's "Ted Curphey" shot on the lake. (Yours are ok also)
Bill, ask and you shall receive. Here are more. I noticed that the "new Improved" service from the lab, extending the processing time from one to three days, also included, at no extra cost, scratches on the negs. At first I thought my old Pentax had a problem, then noted same scratches on the film from the new Nikon. Must be the processing. Anyway, here she is blasting out of Ritzville from a dead stop following a crew change. Bill Stettler at the throttle. Servicing at Paradise, MT Crew, greasing the rods at Paradise. Running through Thompson Falls, MT. We had to leave Minnie's Diner (good grub) to get this shot. Finally, a meet in the middle of Washington state.
Michael, thanks, and I'm sure yours are going to be artistic, as usual. Looking forward to seeing them. She ought to tie up in Sandpoint tomorrow and run to Pasco Tuesday. Back through the beautiful gorge Wednesday. Virtual-bird, I didn't get near the cab on this trip, but may have some old ones. Come to think of it, Chris Fussell published some new ones just recently, and they are probably on the Friends website: http://www.4449.comFriends of 4449
What a bummer! The photos are great. But having those scratches would make me feel very grumpy! Boxcab E50
