This pic was sent to the Railspot group in Yahoo, and depicts one of the Mexican motors enroute to the Deseret-Western, west of Dinosaur, CO. Since there are no rails between Craig and Dinosaur, this is the only way to get it there. And yes, two trucks are behind, pushing the whole thing!

How old is the photo? The original units were transported some eight years ago from GE. The Mexican deal for ten fell through and the Deseret-Western picked up three for a song. From memory, enroute there was a load limited bridge to cross as well.

There was an article in Diesel Era on the two sister roads, the Deseret-Western being one of them. It hauls coal from mine to powerplant on dedicated rails under 25kV overhead fed from the powerplant. They had problems with the bald eagles stepping across the insulators and going *poof* so fitted large plastic disks to the insulators to stop them doing so.
The other was an all-diesel road with SD40's in similar scheme that were washed and polished every Sunday when not hauling coal.

Keep in mind you can only see half the tires from the tractor on back.
I have used Intermountain, but the biggest thing we ever shipped had 4 'jeeps'; that monster has 16.

Gary - this photo is new. It's part of the shipment of locos that just went north a couple of weeks ago.

While the beam/sling arrangement was something new for me (and pretty slick too) this general type of multiwheel hydraulic transporter has been around a long time. They keep making improvements. The units are usually modular so, depending on your load, you just keep adding more lines either in length or width.

Some of them are self propelled and don't even need tractors. The lines of axles are independently steerable, so you can turn the ones on the front to the right, the ones on the back to the left, and virtually turn the entire load about its axis.

I've been involved in moves of large pre-assembled modules, fractionating towers and reactors to refineries, and have seen loads of up to 1000 tons moved. And I know they go a lot higher. Usually you wind up with limitations based on overhead obstructions or bridge capacities.

    Regards

    Ed

[IMG] I've seen some big rig moves. But don't recall ever seeing trucks in pusher service. I suppose if there were a more frequent practice, someone at KW or PB would come up with unmanned units/slaves........

Thanks Ed. D-W must have opted to expand their fleet as they initially had three E60's as per my previous post.
Thinking back on it, the original units never made it to Mexico - the one in the photo above states it's coming from Mexico. [IMG]

    *Addendum*
Looking through the Withers Diesel Era site, it possibly wasn't Diesel Era as mention in my earlier post but the defunct Pacific Rail News the Deseret-Western article was in.

I wonder if they have dynamic brakes?

If it's electric, like I think it is, it has regenrative braking, like dynamics, but put electricity back to the wires for other trains, rather than wasting the energy as heat.

    Hi to all here.
Love the photos of these Heavy Haulage Outfits.
I'm in the 1-87 vehicle club, so there looks like maybe a few modeling projects in the works.
Many Thanks to all for these.
    Regards.
