I seem to recall that some of the first diesel locomotives delivered to the Milwaukee Road were painted black. I have an RS-1 that is black that I'd like to use as a Milwaukee Road diesel.

Anyone know of pictures on the internet of those black Milwaukee Road diesels?

    Ray-

Can't think of any photos on the 'Net. Am sure there could be a few.

AFAIK, all of the early Milw diesels were black. The first RS1 order, which was requisitioned by the military in WWII, was painted black.

If I recall correctly, the first diesels with any color, were their FT units. In the gray with lightning stripes.

I'll keep an eye open. If I spot anything, will let you know.

I am rather fond of RS1's myself, but I don't recall ever seeing one that was black. Might just be the next addition to my engine roster! [IMG]

There's a picture in Frederick Hyde's The Milwaukee Road, showing one switching passenger cars in Chicago. I don't know which page, I don't have it in front of me at the moment.

Ray feel free to use the RS unit as the Milw did recieve an RS unit in black, the road number was 1679 and was sent to Spokane Washington after broken in at Milw shops. Milw pictures of locomotives in black are in the book MIlw Rd 1928-1985, also shows an SW-1, GE 44 ton, Alco S2, Baldwin VO-1000.

    Cory,
If you have a black RS1 get it on here. I have an Atlas RS1 undecorated and it wants to be black! ( I know cause it told me)

Neat! I had never heard of such a MILW scheme (not that that holds any weight)...
I know GN's early engines were painted in black as well; NW3 strikes me as one. I would like to see what it looked like. I assume a red CMStP&P herald on a simple black carbody...

They would have had the herald just like that avatar chosen by 282mike. (Post above.)
