Don't know if this will help, but Terraserver: http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/ has some fairly detailed mapping for most of the US, and some of the mapping dates from the 70's. If you find the location you are looking for on the map (not the sateilite images) then keep zooming in, you'll probably find that there is a fairly detailed map for the time you are looking for. (The more detailed maps are older than the ones you will see first off, so don't be put of by 1980's or 1990's dated maps to start with.) Taking a copy of the modern sateillite image as well can help to size any old buildings still standing.
