I am thinking about painting a model of the candyred SOO in an SD40-2. I have been trying to find good photos. I have seen the drawings on the Soo Histrical page. Have you seen any better and did the Soo have both Dynamic and no Dynamic Breaks, or did most of them not have the Dynamic breaks? Thanks again.
First of all, check out the Graham Stockfeld's Soo Line Photo Archives at http://www.starnet.com.au/soors27/ Original SD40-2 deliveries were non-dynamic brake units. Later units were picked up second-hand from various sources and had dynamics, or were retro-fitted with them. Not all were repainted into Candy-apple red, either. I can get you a fairly comprehensive listing of the -2's, plus I have a painting guide for SD40/40-2's, which is probably what you saw on the SLH&TS site. That guide was created by Rick Johnson and I would trust it too be correct. I'll send the info later. Gary. ------------------ Gary A. Rose The Unofficial TC&W page N to the Nth degree!
Mechanically, no. They are later phase -2's than the one Kato had originally released, particularly in N. The 'snoot' is an extended nose build to house remote telemetry equipment for mid-train helper operations, like Harris's Locotrol. The length varied depending on the orderers requirements. Soo didn't order any 'snoots'. Gary. ------------------ Gary A. Rose The Unofficial TC&W page N to the Nth degree!
ok, if you are thinking the Kato SD40-2, here are the candy-apple red early production units as of late '93... 757-59, 761, 770-72, 779-81 - all non-dynamic. (note - 785-89 were delivered with dyn brakes, but probably didn't get repainted from red/white). Gary. ------------------ Gary A. Rose The Unofficial TC&W page N to the Nth degree!
May I ask how you knew that? Is that just something you know, or do you have a reference? I really appreacite all of you help, I find you a tremdous resource. Thanks again.
The Soo Line railfan's bible - Fred Hyde's 1993 Soo Line Annual (unfortunately out of print). Check Como Shops in Bandana Mall, east St Paul http://www.skypoint.com/~jcluecke/ Also, the info regarding the snoots is something I picked up over time. The news mags like CTC Board and Pacific Rail News/Rail News (now defunct), plus Diesel Era, are all indespensable sources for information. A good article on Soo SD40/40-2's appeared in Diesel Era Vol4 no3, May/June 1993, issue (available). Check http://www.witherspub.com/deback.htm Gary. ------------------ Gary A.
