I stopped railfanning for a few years from bascially 1986-?? ...due to marriage / family etc...
So when I last railfanned the old SP, they still ran cabooses...had the full light package etc...

I took this attached image in 1989...by then cabooses were gone...the light packages had changed/standardized....and alot of their T-motors were renumbered due to the merger with the DRGW etc....the SP was changing..

shot taken just south of Palmdale, Ca along Sierra Highway...before Barrel Springs Road.

I like the photo and the head-on angle. Looks like SD40T-2, SD40T-2, SD45, and a GE.

Vrery Nice Photo. However;Having Lived In Flatonia,Texas; The Caboose Didn't Quite Dissapear Until 1993.They Still Ran Cabeese*(*Mostly SP/SSW Bay Window; Some D&RGW Cupola/Wide Vision; On Santa Fe Grain Train Run Throughs and BN Coleto Creek Coal Trains,They Were The Mother Road's Cabeese:ATSF Red Cupola/BN Green Wide Vision.)On The Shiner Branch as Well As Sunset Route/DALSA Freights Until 1993.By The Way,While Flatonia May Not Have The Scenery of Tehachapi,There's Still Plenty Of Action!!

Nice photo! Is it just the angle? Or is this train on a slight downgrade?

Not unless GEs have angled dynamic brake radiators. It's another EMD, SD40T-2 by the looks of it. Notice the raised, but not widened, section at the end of the long hood, like on the closer units.

And FWIW, the lead unit is an SD45T-2R (Sacramento-rebuilt SD45T-2). Nonetheless, sweet pic - that's the SP I grew up with...and miss!
