Are these things rare? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6054533822&ssPageName=STRK:HPWA:US http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6054205259&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 ??? I'm not interested in the roadnames, (though the "hooker" car looks nice.) just the model. If I move and replace the trucks I think it would be a nice model, but not for $35 bucks! Can they be found more commonly elsewheres? Thanks.
I think most marklin rolling stock is a bit more pricey than MT. At least that is what I have noticed. 35 seems to be what I have always seen these go for unfortunatley. Although I am sure someone here might know of cheap place to get them.
Chriss, They look like regular Marklin tankers to me. The price of those tanker is close to retail, but tankers are not frequent item on e-bay. If you have patience, I think they can be had for less.
Thanks guys, Guess I will keep a look out for one, if any body has one for sale let me know. Funny the Marklin car has railings around the dome like a chemical car would, but a chemical car would have sharp squared ends. This one's are rounded. MT's tankcar has the squared off ends, but no railings. Other than that and the truck spacing, I think Marklin has MT beat as far as tankcars.
I Don't have a Single Marklin tanker. I have watch every single auction for 2 years, and I have never been able to buy one. They Always end up going for either >$40 or the auction ends in the middle of the night and I get outbid by 50 cents. I want that style of tank platform, and can care less about the rest of the tank. I have given up on aquiring the Marklin ones when the MTL's can be had for <$15 routinely, so I decided the draw up some etched brass platforms, to retrofit an MTL. Also I want the grab rail to be wire instead of molded on. -Robert
This one does look like the MT car: http://www.steamfreightcars.com/images/gallery/tank/tcx2479.jpg Almost like the Marklin car: http://www.steamfreightcars.com/images/gallery/tank/acf%20tanks/dowx38148c.jpg http://www.steamfreightcars.com/images/gallery/tank/acf%20tanks/micx502.jpg
Okay-I messed up...(don't have DuPont, have Ethyl) So I realize I sold the DuPont the weekend before last at the Tri-State Z Scalers meeting (New York) as part of a lot. I did realize however I have a duplicate of the Marklin 8225 Ethyl Tank Car (gray with black markings and yellowlettering, Road Number EBAX 6039). You can see an example of it here (not mine): http://z-world.com/cgi-bin-local/iteminfo3.cgi?items=1&entry=^8225$&submitButtonName=search So to those who e-mailed me privately, let me know if you are still interested. Sorry for the confusion!!! Michael
First I would like to say a big THANK YOU! to Jürg for his generous gift of Marklin tank cars. Guys like him give Z scalers a good name:teeth: I started to modify the frame to get a correct truck spacing and use MT trucks and couplers. I notched the end sills for the couplers to fit, drilled and tapped holes for them, and cut the backs of the boxes off so I could get them closer to the bolster. Then I filled in the original truck mounting holes with Alumilite resin. Once that hardened I cut away a filed smooth until it looked like it was never there. Now I built up a new bolster using the MT height gauge to get the thickness right. Once that was done I angled the sides to taper down to the frames edges. This should give you a better idea: I'll post more once I get it painted and weathered up.
Looking good Chris! That's kind of what I had planned on doing too. I also like the hazard diamond plates that I used to see on tank cars.
Very Nice Mods You guyz are doing wonderful thingz in "Z" scale. Awesome even! Love the tank car mods! Hobo Tim
Phil, I used a strip of styrene, grounded down till it was as wide as the tank supports on top of the frame. Once I glued that onto the frame I tapered the sides down with a file. Now I chucked up a coupler and truck to check the couplers height with the gauge. I found another thin shim was needed so it's what you see as the raised part in the center of the bolster. Now the couplers lined up correctly. Nothing was measured, just picked through the scrap styrene till it was the right size. Filed the rest to shape. The total height of the bolster is about .072" (give or take) high. Hope that helps. A little bit of an update. I thought the frame looked a bit thin in my photos, so I built up the center down the frame with more strip styrene. Then added a slice of a toothpick with a thread tied around it to look like a air tank. Along with other little bits to give it brake valves and a cylinder. Not the most detailed in the world, but it need something to fill in and my the shadows look "right" Photo to come...
Alrighty all done this time. The underside showing the crude brake detail. A little bit of light weathering: Thanks again Jürg, it really made my day to convert this car!
