I am requesting input on possible changes to the the Rochelle Subdivision. FOr information on the changes please go to www.stpaulrochelle.org/blog Daryl
The new Nelson yard will provide longer tracks, and that's always a plus. Looks like you're going for a very open, uncrowded look. That's fine, especially for modelling a western road like UP. I do value mainline length, though, and the new plan is a bit light on along-the-line switching. I wonder if there's some way to recapture more of the old plan. Unfortunately, this room is a little narrow for spiral-aisle configuration... What's the real-life order of the towns? What's your minimum radius?
How about adding the industry at Franklin Grove, as show in this map: http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=10&Z=16&X=1546&Y=23173&W=3&qs=|franklin+grove|il| You could add in a local switcher to your operations...
I think the isle access is better, makes operations easier on the operators. Nelson Yard looks better too. Jim.
I like it. I'm not too enamored of a short peninsula on my layout, so eliminating it will be good. The yard will be much more functional. You'll have more space in the aisles. The one long peninsula should work very well.
The real order, east to west, is Rochelle, Ashton, Franklin Grove, Dixon and Nelson. Minimum Radius is 24 inches. Daryl
Daryl: While the new tracks at Nelson are much longer, all you've created is a parking lot. There are no switching leads or anything. Would you expand on the concept to make it a working yard or would it remain "visible staging"?
The yard will definately be a working yard. I was just putting in a yard ladder to see how things might fit into the space. Looks like there should be room for 25-30 car trains in the arrival/departure tracks. There will also be engine facilities, a couple of industries and an intermodal yard. Daryl
If you're planning on that length of trains, then Ashton passing siding will only be able to handle locals. Don't change this. This is the sort of operational limitation/interest I try to design into plans to make towns distinct.
Dayrl, I was watching your DVD of the current layout the other night and I think what you have created is fantastic. Any chance of just increasing the lenght of the yard tracks and leave the layout as is?
Hey, There's never enough yard trackage. So the more you can get, take it.I'm sure whatever you decide,it will be outstanding !!!!!!!!!!
