Who was the guy, right here on "Trainboard", who referred to "plastic candy". He was so right and I wish I'd said it first.

I think I might be embarrassed to say I have Secret Weapon beat, I must be nutz. Sad thing is present layout can only handle maybe 10 on the rails at one time. Oh well it's a hobby. The 0-5-0 gets alot of work!

MU city I'm modeling the D&RGW from Helper to Soldier Summit ca. 1965... a little later than I had earlier planned, so I have a bunch of FTs that I no longer need. My problem is that, during this era, you saw a minimum of four-unit sets on the front AND the back of nearly every major train headed up the grade... and often, there were more than four. In Rio Grande in Color, Vol. II (Utah), there's a picture of a mid-Sixties freight at Soldier Summit with ELEVEN F units on the front end. Plus, I've planned my layout so that I really NEED that kind of power to get up the grades, which top out at about 3 - 3.5%. With four GP-30s on the nose and four SD-7s providing help on the tail end, I can get 35 Trainworx quad hoppers up the grade. So, presently, I have the following power sets available for service: F3 (Kato) A-B-B-A (California Zephyr) A-B-B-A (general service) A-B-A (Prospector) F7 (Intermountain) A-B-B-B-A (freight) A-B-B-A (freight) GP-30/35 (Atlas) - four units SD-7 (Atlas) - four units GP-7 (Atlas) - four units Alco PA/PB A-B-A (California Zephyr) A really cool thing about modeling the Grande in '65 is that, due to an agreement with the Burlington, one could expect a daily train pulled by CB&Q GP-30/35 units in the beautiful Chinese red and grey paint scheme. I'm hoping to add a four-unit set of these to my roster. I also have four Alco RSD 4/5s that, at some point, I'm going to paint (or have painted) for Utah Railway service. I have a bunch of other stuff that I bought when I was thinking of focusing on a mid-1950s time frame... 2 FT A-B-B-A sets, 2 Alco RS-2s, and a couple of Alco S-2 switchers. I think about selling them but I don't really want to. Who knows? I might get interested in that time frame again! I really think I have enough locos... it would be nice to have lots more, but I'm running DCC, and it's somewhat painful (and expensive) to purchase and install decoders in every new loco. Pondering this makes one stop and think before hitting the BUY NOW button (which is probably a good thing). --Bryan Pfaffenberger Charlottesville, VA
Or F-units (esp. if you model the CGW..... ) Frisco had 146 GP38/38-2 units total- I'm shooting for a total of 14, as I'd like to get 10% of every diesel Frisco had in the 1975-1978 period. As it is, I like GP38s- they're the Mikados of dieseldom. You can use 'em on mainline hotshots, secondary trains, branchines, locals, or even switching in the yard. Even unit coal & grain trains (Frisco did run a 31-car unit coalie from Garland, KS to a power plant at Republic, MO using 2 GP38-2s as power in the 1970s) can be moved by these engines, altho nowadays modern RRs prefer using six-axle hi-horsepower diesels for this task.
didn't think I'd catch this, did ya? And it bloody well should be!!!!!!! :teeth: :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:
I absolutely agree. GP-38’s are for some reason my favorite locos. Atlas made me very very very happy when they announced this beauty…
Please, what is a "Goldilocks loco"? paint scheme? As for loco count: Mangament of The Grey and Grandure buys and runs "What ever looks good and or appeals to women". As such G and G has A Bullet Trains - Cause they are sexy BAR Geeps - Cause they are handsom Santa Fe WarBonnet Turbines - Cause they are handsom GN of all kinds including X UP/ Repainted U50s, CP Rail of all sorts - Cause the bright red really stands out. 2-6-0s and 4-4-0 cause they are "cute"
LOL... A Goldilocks loco is an engine that is not too big, not too small, but juuuuust right! (you know, the childhood story about Goldilocks and the three bears..) to Dave Hughes: Wow, that Geep in the P&W paint scheme sure looks snappy! I've seen some P&W GE units down here in the Long Island Railroad's Fresh Pond Yard here in Queens, NY now and then (kind of rare) when they bring in the odd freight or two, but never saw a GP38. Now I gotta put that P&W GP38 on my purchase list. (do I REALLY need another locomotive? )
